Having trouble.after replacing the head gasket.

Hi Guys
I have replaced the head gasket on my mk one polo timed the cam as shown in the manual but the engine will not start, it seems to fire on one cylinder just the once then just turn's over. I have been told i need to use pegs to time it right would any body any thing about this and what i should try next.

Is it a single camshaft with a timing belt and 4 cylinder?.
