6R GTI intercooler outlet hard plastic pipe flow restriction/grill

Post by kiddfrost »

Hi everyone,

I’m just changing the water pump on my 6r gti and removed the hard plastic pipe from intercooler to throttle pipe.

When I had the pipe out, I noticed there’s a grid/grill at one end of the pipe.

Does anyone know what this is for?
Has anyone cut it out to try and improve performance?

Thanks

I doubt you will get any gains if you remove it. its minimal

Thanks for info.
I was kind of thinking along the same lines once I’d thought about it. The flow is going to be very turbulent through that pipe and this helps the air exit in a controlled manner.

I’ve worked out the surface area of the grill and it’s the equivalent of putting a 12mm wide strip across the middle of the hole. It could make a difference not being there perhaps at stage2 level.
I guess I should be sensible and leave it in place.

But of course I’m not going to do that, I’m going to cut it out to see what happens.
It will probably screw things in some way and I’ll have to replace the pipe. If I’m lucky, it makes no real difference or it goes better.

If you are going to do it go for it, nothing bad is going to happen.
I made some fins on my ic end tank, in my case i didnt notice any large restriction but they help a lot.

Im no mechanical engineer but i did a lots flow testing to find what suits my needs.

In flow dynamics, something our new and appreciated member Slawa is apparently very good at, sometimes having something that goes against your feeling of 'it's blocking 12mm!' can in fact make things flow better. Turbulent flows, sharp bends and other obstacles can prove to be very disturbing to your flow. I'd leave it in place. A very similar intercooler setup is used on the Polo R WRC with the 2.0 TSI engine and that will easily surpass the 1.8T in terms of power. It's probably not the tubes that are the limiting factor but the intercooler itself, if any.

Well he should data log his intake temperature.
If they are much higher than ambient temperature you should upgrade your intercooler.
This will make squeezing power much safer and easier.

I really doubt you are going to get more airflow by removing it, it's not that restrictive because of its orientation in the pipe. (I mean look at the intercoolers where air has to pass etc.)
But many sell the hard pipe kits etc. and they have nothing inside, I doubt any gain-loss is significant for you to feel it.

Without you doing datalogging with and without the fin you couldn't really tell the difference.

Well rich mixture is safer.

If I translated correctly, then a rich mixture can pour a maximum to get a water hammer. And the poor one burns out with high temperatures, and the nozzles of the nozzles at the wrong angle break up the pistons

I’ll do some logging just to see but haven’t got anything useful to compare it to.

Forgot to mention am at Revo stage 2. IAT’s are fine with the Airtec, it seems a decent intercooler.

I know it’s not the same thing, but on the older 2.0T ea113 engine the runner flaps tend to be removed. My understanding is the runner flaps were engineered for efficiency at lower rpm’s but caused a restriction at higher rpm’s on tuned engines.
I’m just very loosely applying the same principal.
From what you are all saying I know its probably best left in, but hey, the pipe’s out so may as well have a bit of fun trying to mod and do some experimentation.

Just an update:

Did it make a difference? Nothing to write home about, the car feels a little more eager to go, maybe a little more midrange but this is just butt dyno, no hard facts here. Would I do it again, probably not.
From what I can tell it doesn’t go any worse. MPG, only time will tell.

Surprisingly what I believed made a difference was changing the solenoid valve on the turbo from a Rev D non-diaphragm leaky version to the current airtight 03C145710E Rev E version.
Again, butt dyno and no hard facts but I felt it did pull better on wot.
