Maximum wheel size

I have 2012 1.2 polo (I believe it's a 6R) comes with standard 14" wheels. I want to get some second hand alloy wheel replacement. What is the max size that will fit my car without any issues and want spec wheels do I need? Do I need to look for ones from only a certain year range of polos? Or do newer polo wheels work on this?

you can calculate the circumference of the tyre by hand or with online tools. it should still equal your factory size, i.e. 185/60R15, 215/45R16, 215/40R16, 215/35R18 etc.

@john2k; There’s a useful calculator on www.willtheyfit.com. If you input details of your existing and new wheel / tyre set up, it’ll calculate the important numbers for you and whether or not you’re likely to have any clearance / tyre rubbing issues; wider alloys with a more aggressive offset would significantly increase the potential risk of clearance / rubbing issues. As for wheel diameter; I personally wouldn’t go any larger than 17” alloys, which was the largest diameter alloys VW fitted from the factory on the 6r / 6c Polo (the exception was the special limited edition 2013 Polo WRC model that car had 18” alloys).

Bear in mind that the larger the wheel size, the more expensive the tyres will be and the ride will also be much firmer. There’s also an increased risk of damage to the alloys as the lower profile tyre on a larger wheel provides less cushioning effect against road hazards such as potholes or raised / lowered drain covers, and with the rim of the wheels being closer to the road, the risk of scraping the wheel against a kerb when parallel parking increases.

Fitting different alloys to those originally fitted to the car is a modification for insurance purposes, so if you change your wheels, don’t forget to inform your insurance company.

The largest standard for that is 215/40R17 87T on a 7Jx17 rim with ET46.

Keep an eye out for parts 6R0 601 025 A and 6R0 601 025 H on eBay, etc. I tell the insurance company I'm using OEM rims fitted with summer tyres, with the originals kept for winter use (which is true in my case). They are quite happy with that.
