rear camera fitting in new polo gti ?

Post by LEEA123 »

Hi all, so the car is on the ship on its way, the spec of the car does have a rearview camera I believe. Is this an option I could have done at the dealer sometime after purchase if I wanted ? . Do you think it would be very expensive?
Thank you

You’ve said the spec of the car does have a reversing camera. I’m assuming you meant to say it doesn’t have one, otherwise you wouldn’t be asking it can be retro-fitted.

Getting options retro-fitted is always more expensive than speccing them as factory options at the time of ordering the car. I might be wrong but seem to remember reading on a Golf forum some while ago that a dealer had said they couldn’t fit a reversing camera to a mk8 Golf - I don’t know the reason(s) why; it might just have been down to supply chain issues with parts (VW dealers would certainly fit them on the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf). If they genuinely can’t fit them to the current Golf then that might also be the case with a facelift Polo - easiest way to find out is to ask your dealer. If the dealer quotes you a price, make sure it’s for the reversing camera that fits behind the tailgate release handle and not one that’s externally mounted above the rear number plate.

As a factory fit option when the car is built, the current price for the reversing camera on a Polo GTI is £275.
  • a quick Google search suggests that getting it done at a retro-fit company that specialises in installing these types of item(s) would probably cost in the region of £450 - £500, but having the installation carried out by a retro-fit company and not a VW dealer is likely to have warranty implications.
  • If a VW dealership can / will do the installation, it’ll almost certainly be more expensive than getting it done at a specialist retro-fitting company. Sorry, I have no idea how much more expensive.

Hi there… im looking to add a RC on my 2016 polo 1.8 gti tsi , ive looked about on youtube & asked around dealers on a price & fitting one & if its able to attach to the unit in the glovebox , vw told me that i would have to change out the unit thats in the glovebox as thats the brain for the headinit , i looked at the inputs on the unit in GBox & its got a grey blanked input which the grey grommet can be popped out to add an input of somesort but not sure if its for a RCam input ?
To swap the unit out would indeed be expensive . I think the camera boot latch can be reasonably cheap to purchase either secondhand or brand new , actually installing a RC & all the bits should be relatively easy if your a tinkerer , its just making sure you have all the correct units & cables .

My Granddaughter's partner had a reverse camera fitted to his Skoda Octavia and he tells me that the cost of which was circa £500 if that is any help :)

FYI reverse cameras on the 6c polo are located by the number plate in between the number plate lamps not in the rear badge as per golf mk7 :D

Correct. My 6c GTI had a factory fitted rear view camera. As it’s exposed to the elements, it gets covered in road spray and dirt in wet weather, so the infotainment screen image of the view behind the car isn’t great when the camera lens is dirty which limits it’s usefulness. I only spec’d it on my car as it was bundled with some other options into a pack by VW, so the reversing camera actually only cost me £25.

Forum member @fluidicjoy has fitted a mk7 Golf style rear view camera to their 6c Polo that’s located behind VW emblem release handle on the tailgate. Link to thread below;
