Apple Play Sat Nav

Post by Andy D »

My Polo GTI+ does not have SatNav. What are the mechanics of using my Apple iPhone for SatNav ?

If you plug your phone into the car with the correct cable, then you can use car play. Then you have access to Apple sat nav, Google maps and waze. I’ve always found the latter two better than apples.

I'm not an Apple user but did a quick Google and Youtube search and came up with these three websites:

https://support.apple.com/en-za/HT203412
https://support.apple.com/en-za/HT20563 ... our%20car.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMyJkt68-fc

Hope it is of some help in guiding you along to get it all going smoothly.

Many thanks for your response, the YouTube one hopefully has the answer :)

As per post 2, I occasionally switch to Apple connection and use Google Map to find some strange place.

Most of the time I ignore the Apple connection and prefer the Bluetooth connection to (a) let me play my cached music from Radio Paradise and (b) use the phone connection in front of me in Digi Dash for the occasional call in or out with a few clicks from my thumb on the wheel.

For longer trips I stick a Garmin on the screen for proper navigation functionality.

I have Garmin in my Mercedes and I not all that impressed with it. It leads me up roads that are barely wide enough for the car whatever profile you pick, whether it be fastest route, main road or whatever :(

I prefer waze myself. Also marks speed cameras, mobile cameras and police

I’ve enjoyed (?) SatNavs for many years. On 2 wheels and 4. Bike rides round Europe. Motor homes from Italy to UK.
And always in my cars in UK.

It’s a battle of wills between Man and GPS.

You can’t trust them as far as you can throw them :D

I’ve learned how to beat them at their own game.

Never, ever turn of a nice big road into a dirt track. It’ll always recalculate and get you to your destination.

used apple maps, but was annoyed with the direction arrows on the main dash coming on every time. use google now, no arrows on the main dash. Would like to use the built-in one , but if it was the same as my golf 8 then no way. it was useless for me
