1.2 12v timing chain 2007

Post by TommyPolo »

Hello, I’m wondering if anyone has experience of this?

For a little while now I’ve noticed on start up the engine rattles, I suspected the timing chain and was gearing up to replace it.

Then the other I started it after it had sat for a week, it made a terrible noise on start up and then died and would not start. I again figured it had jumped a tooth and possibly bent valves?

Setting the engine at TDC using a DTI down cyl 1 it looked like the cam slots were slightly out this comfirmed my suspicion that the timing had slipped a tooth.

I tried my best to do a compression test with my tester but its only a push in and hold type, cy1 was low around 5 bar, 2 amd 3 had plenty of compression around 11bar. I suspected a bent valve or 2 but surely it would bend valves on all cylinders?

I have removed the Timing cover, and taken the chain and sprockets off and taken the cam cover off. Pretty sure the chain has been in for 120k so guessing that is worn/stretched? It has quite a bend in it when bending it on it’s side which I have also been told is a give away that the pins are worn. There is some pitting on the tensioner slides too.

Looking at the tops of the valves and putting a straight edge on them they are all exactly at the same level, if a valve was bent surely this would show as a valve being held open? I don’t want to take the head off if there’s no need.

Doubting myself on wether I did a good compression test on cyl 1 now???? I could just bite the bullet and take the head off to check.

Finally if the valves are all fine is it possible for piston rings to instantly fail?

Scratching my head here!
