Gremlins

Post by Bikergonebald »

My daughters car has some intermittent electrical problems and I wonder if they are linked.

Sometimes the left indicator flashes rapidly as if a bulb has failed.
The right window switch operates the left window and vice versa
The oil light came on with beeping. It stayed on even after to being topped up. The next day it had stopped.

All are intermittent faults.
The car is a 2004 1.2 twist

All thoughts welcome. My daughter is away from home so I can’t do any diagnostics.

Thanks
Kevin

Sounds like the flasher unit. I read somewhere that is built into the hazard lamp switch but not sure if true.
Window crossover is one of the gremlins that comes and goes on my old 2002, generally during damp weather. I've not been able to find the cause. It is intermittent and generally very infrequent.
Check for codes. I once had to swap out the low-level oil unit due to a fault. The wiring down there could be a bit vulnerable too - so worth a close inspection.

Thanks for your reply.
It sounds like I need to treat them all as separate issues.
I’m going there tomorrow so hopefully I can figure it out.

The indicator function WAS built into the hazard switch on my old 2000 VW Passat 4Motion, it did fail once in its 13 years from new with me, but typically it failing was either starting to flash the indictor, either side and then stop either with the lights on of off, or not responding to the demand from the stalk. Replacing that hazrd switch sorted that out.

Electric window switch function swopping sides apreared/appears frequently in the similar aged Skoda Fabia. (briskoda.net)

Another gremlin on my 2002 9N is that the rear fog lamp comes on when the sidelights (headlights) are switched on after the car has been in the sun and gets hot. After a short-ish time (when driving or in shade) the fog lamp extinguishes. The rear wiper is also affected by the weather (mainly rain) although less problematic since I swapped out the motor. On (thankfully) rare occasions, the central locking clicks many times and the windows go down - I guess this is programmatic but have not yet figured out the trigger.

Window switch crossover occurred briefly over the weekend - unable to explain the cause.
