Help to retrofit MFSW in my 6R POLO

Post by Volkov »

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.

After a few ups and downs, I've just got my Polo back from the garage after an engine replacement. I really love this car (it was a gift from my father). Rather than replacing it (I unfortunately had to seriously consider that question when it broke down), now that I've got it back with a new engine, I'd like to make the interior a bit more comfortable. It's only a "Trendline mixed with a Comfortline" (it's impossible to know the exact trim level, and some sites say Trendline while others say Comfortline). Anyway, the plastic steering wheel is crumbling with age, and I was wondering whether it might be worth trying an MFSW while I'm at it.

So I've had a look around the forum, but I haven't reached a definite conclusion.

I understood that I need to remove the airbag to be sure of the number of pins.

What I do know, following a VCDS scan, is that my versions are as follows:

Address 15: Airbags (J234) Labels:* Redir Fail!
Part No SW: 6R0 959 655 K HW: 6R0 959 655 K
Component: VW10Airbag01K H09 0020
Address 09: Cent. Elect. (J519) Labels:. 6R0-937-08x-09.clb
Part No SW: 6R0 937 087 K HW: 6R0 937 087
Component: BCM PQ25 H+4 H46 0251
Address 19: CAN Gateway (J533) Labels:. 6N0-909-901-6R.clb
Part No SW: 6N0 909 901 HW: 6R0 937 087
Component: GW-K-CAN TP20 H46 0251

Did someone already try it with this versions ?

Also, did you have some tips to restore my headliner?

Thanks a lot :)

Hi.
My recommendation is to install a leather MFSW that is "in good condition", along with its corresponding airbag.
If you know how to search and where to buy, the final cost and the overall result will be better than dealing with the complexities of airbag compatibility, or worn-out steering wheels from a scrapyard.

If your vehicle didn't come with an MFSW from the factory, you will need to add the necessary wiring/wires for the buttons to function.
Perhaps the seller can provide this wiring at no extra cost, along with comprehensive technical support to ensure a flawless installation and coding process.

New Engine = New MFSW

Hello there,

Thanks for the advice.
When you say “if you know how to search and where to buy”, could you give me a few examples of where you’d look, or the search terms you’d use? I’m new to this and want to avoid buying an incompatible wheel or airbag.

Actualy I’m scearching on Ovoko and I actually found an listed 2010 leather wheel but I’m afraid by the airbag incompatibility and an remplacement because of takata lol

Thanks :)

Purchasing from Ovoko carries a high level of risk. People who work in the auto-salvage business are—or are compelled to be—inherently distrustful.

If you run into issues with the item you receive (which is highly likely when dealing with something like a multifunction steering wheel), you’ll practically need to be a magician to get a refund in case of return, as the outcome ultimately rests on the seller’s decision—and they will flatly refuse to accept your return.

Unlike other marketplaces, Ovoko has a natural tendency to side with the seller, and they intentionally delay returning your money, even if you think you have everything on your side for obvious reasons due to the failure of the item received, or that they sent you a different item than the one you purchased.

Why do you need to be a magician to process a return in Ovoko? Because you are required to provide evidence you likely don’t have—such as a video of the unboxing of the item (a crucial piece of proof that almost no one thinks to record)—along with a series of photographs showing how the item is packed for return.
You then have to upload all of this into Ovoko’s editing tool—a cramped interface that only displays a single line of content—which makes the process of uploading videos and images a nightmare. Furthermore, Ovoko’s "AI" is designed to trap you in a loop, repeatedly asking the same questions about the reason for your return—it’s an absolute ordeal.

In my H (or F) opinion, the only clear advice is to opt for scrap yards located in Lithuania or Sweden, and try to avoid, as far as possible, those located in Poland (🤐🙏). Make the payment through Paypal, they will help you with final claims.

Buy a model of MFSW and airbag that is not affected by those made by Takata.

Thank you ciclo for your time and your help.

I actually fond this wheel (wich i was mentionning earlier), his shape is visibly matching with my default plastic actual wheel. I think i will go with it. If you think i should'nt say it to me ^^

It is impossible for me to offer you advice regarding any specific item—especially if it is a second-hand part viewed only through images found online—as it is highly likely that our expectations or tolerance levels differ considerably.

I have edited the image you posted on my device to get a closer, sharper look at certain parts of that multifunction steering wheel, which shows damage on the leather... and a couple of viruses.

What I can recommend, however, is that you use ETKA and the PR codes to at least determine the compatibility of the new parts you intend to assemble with the ones you already have. viewtopic.php?p=466570#p466570

It is highly likely that you will need to replace the windshield wiper lever/stalk if the current one features the "TRIP" button.

Yes, it’s clear that it has seen some life, and it probably has a new strain of the COV-Whell26 virus on it haha.
I’ll try to “bring the leather back” and give it a deep clean, just to at least know that it works with my current setup. If it does, I’ll then look for a more expensive one in better condition.
Regarding the windshield wiper stalk, why would I need to replace it? I do have the TRIP function, but would it just be to match everything and get a better overall look, or is there another reason? What motivated me to do this—and made me realise it was possible—was a YouTube video of a guy who had done it in his first-generation Amarok, which uses the same steering wheels and stalks. He said he changed his stalks so they matched, and mine are starting to wear off, so I was planning to replace them at the same time anyway :)

It is not possible to have the same buttons on both the multifunction steering wheel and the windshield wiper lever, as they are incompatible. The instrument cluster and the BCM cannot process both types of signals simultaneously.
