I think its up to the discretion of passing police officers and what mood they might be in  I'm not sure if the highway code mentions it?

If it were me, I'd have an on-the-spot fine introduced if a car has its fogs on in urban (streetlamp-lit) areas, unless the driver had good reason. Its a pet hate to see the local nova/saxo brigade driving about the town centre with fogs on :x

according to the Highway Code : You must not use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (generaly 100 metres) , not that most people adhere to that anyway.

it actually well annoys me when people use their fog lights rather than their headlights

why do they do this?

are fog lights some sort of status symbol?

is anyone impressed by them?

i think they all should be pulled over and a copper should say "do you feel special sir?"

if not then it bloody should be

problem is its as easy to do quite by accident as breakign the speed limit is, particularly if your car's switch design and warning light complement is less than adequate.....

Sadly it's not just Nova's it's any incompitant tw*t out there that drives with them on. Basically the use of your fog lights is as stated in their name to be used in cases of fog.

Sadly some people are tircked in to using them by the dealers when the dealers call them other names than "fog lights". However you have to be pretty stupid if your one of those people who were "confused" by the dealer.

Fog lights really wouldn't be a problem if they were actually adjusted as they should be, ie to point down at the road immediately in front of you so that you can see where you're going in severe fog.. the problem is that they're invariably set up to shine as far as the dipped beam does, which means that because they're low slung they have to be angled almost straight forward so they shine straight in everyone's eyes..
If I'm honest, I don't have foglights for practical purposes, I have them because they look good, and I think that's why most people have them really, it's not like we often get real pea soups in this country. However, I always keep them properly adjusted and they always have their covers on unless I really can't see where I'm going without them..

Foglights do improve the looks of most cars I have to agree. Just get a little peeved by their misuse I guess :(

EDIT: I knew there was a reason for taking this pic a few months ago...

fiesta drivers that call them "spots" and truck about with them and just the sidelights on... know a couple... numptys who wont give it up (not mates, just people i know via other people, like)

cant see where you're going, blind other folk, and whats more - even if they were spotlamps you shouldnt have them turned on in traffic (ie rally type "driving lamps" as found on our beloved 4-lamp grilles)...
