using logik's mk3 as an example, here is the radiator baffle, also insulation

i know you didnt mean the barry bit, i was pulling your leg matey :) and glad you like it as is now, i wasnt so sure before, either ;)

@groovy: as you have a carb you are lucky to be able to do a bolt on, i had this on my mk2. its much louder than the induction kit and on my weber setup it made a much bigger difference in torque than my induction kit. Bearing in mind we are comparing chalk with cheese between the mk2 and mk3.

Old thread I know but Im doing a bit of research. :P

Im going to do this with my mk2 but I wont be using a Cone air filter but my spare GT airbox. Itll look very neat and I can use the "warm air pipe mod" to stop carb icing! 8) Now all I need is some bolts...

not to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything but could you make the pic a little larger next time?

I got one of these spi throttle body elbows today for £2! :) Now All I need is the bolts and the car to fit them on!

just thought i'd make an update!

i managed to aquire (for free) a slightly different top part! this one however has the oil breather pipe in the correct place for a polo! which means no extra piping for the oil breather!

what is also great is built into the oil breather pipe, there is a none return valve which means that when you pull more air into the engine, the valve shuts and there for you won't be sucking through the oil breather and all your air will come from the induction kit!

i've taken out the metal sleaves in the holes, then all i got to do is open the holes out and fit it!i shall get some pics soon!

also this one has got the orange sensor in so no need to change from the red to the orange!

What is the difference between the orange and red sensor thing then?

yeah Ive got one of those too, infact ive got both designs now. And neither fit on a 1986 pierburg 2E3 Carburettor. The reason being is that the bolts in the carburettor are 8mm whereas the adaptors on the golf and passat setup are 10mm.

But this one is alot better than the passat one for the reasons you say. There are also alot less restrictions on this type I found it the boot of a mk3 golf at a scrapyard. (the engine had been taken) Whats the difference in the vacuum switches? And why do you have to open up the holes?

ummmm! one works and one doesn't!

not sure y they are different, i ran a red one for a bit and it didn't idle too well, so i swopped it ova to a orange one and it ran better! was only really when the car was warming up, i reckon the temperature the red sensor changes at is lower than the orange one!

o yeah, i'm also sporting a warm air feed from the exhaust heat shield! without it, the car would idle too slow and sometimes stall! with the warm air feed it runs sweet as a nut!

I cant imagine why that would improve anything to do with the idle. Its a temperature switch that acitvates the warm air intake on the standard induction system setup. Soon as you move over to a cold air induction kit this becomes obsolete and can be removed. You have to block the vacuum pipe coming from the throttle body and thats it.

u'd be suprised!

when i was running the red sensor, with the vaccum pipe connected, when the car ran rough on idle, i hopped out and took the vaccum pipe off and the idle incresed to normal, then blocked it and it ran rough again! so i left it off, and after a bit longer, it started running rough again, and this time when i blocked the hole, the idle picked up to normal! very annoying!

so just blocking the vaccum wouldn't work! now i have the orange sensor connected in with the vaccum pipe on, it ran perfect through the whole of the summer!

once the colder weather closed in, it started rough idling again, which was soon sorted by a warm air feed!

Just to clarify, do you mean this?

If you do then you can just unplug the vacuum pipes from it as it doesnt do anything, but block the pipe off that goes from there to your throttle body as that could have explained the rough running.

yeah thats the sensor, infact thats the new top part i've got!

well thats wot i thought, block the vaccum and it'll b fine, but for some reason its not, but tbh, it don't really matter as it runs fine as it is now!

What you describe there could just have been the engine compensating for changing its conditions. If you left the vacuum pipe blocked off Id put money on your engine eventually sorting itself out.

As for the cold weather creating problems though thats fair enough. Which is why eventually when I do this I will be using a GT airbox and a permanent warm air feed for the winter. Maybe itll warm the engine up a bit quicker then as well. :)

Fair doos. As for the new part I said in an earlier post Id got that one as well.

seems to look much better, wot with the oil breather where it is!

i must admit, it was wierd with this vaccum pipe thing!

when i was running the red sensor and doing a 50 mile trip, i would pic up a mate about 10 mins away from my house and i would have to remove the vaccum pipe from the sensor, then when i picked up another mate about 20mins from there, i would have to put it back on again! twoz very wierd, but when i put the orange sensor on, it was fine! i think a gt box would be a good idea! well worth it! at least then u've got all the correct bits n bobs for the hot air feed! but the system i got set up atm works a treat!
