I'm quite happy with my FSI!

I'm getting up to 430 miles from a full tank of optimax (around £30)

Although you have to drive real careful not really going over 3000rpm. The worst I've had so far was around 280 but was really putting my foot down.

I've heard that someone was only getting 200 miles from their 16v 100bhp 9n so it appears to vary quite a lot.

used supermarket fuel once from Asda not very good at all was hard work to get 500 miles (stick to esso fuel now )
I always get diesel from Tesco - firstly because it's cheaper and secondly because I like the 'pay at the pump' system. But I'll try some other stuff on the next tank and see what difference to mpg it makes.

update 27th Aug!
Finally got round to filling up somewhere else (BP I think) and am amazed by the difference! I can usually *just about* manage 60 to the gallon on my 20 mile drive to work, but this tank is managing 65 and doing it much more easily! I never thought different fuel brands would make a difference, but so far, it looks like they do!

I've put a post in before when I managed 480 on a tankful - I'm currently on 440 miles with 70miles in the tank on the MFA, this was mostly motorway miles but 80+ were whilst I was crawling along in traffic on the M25 last Friday.

The only Diesel I put in the car is from BP (nothing else) and I don't feather it around to get this MPG if I did then 550+ will be attainable. Diesels improve with mileage and this is certainly the case for me. 8)

Oh, 13,000 miles and my total MPG is 48.7.

Des, did you sort out your service in the end and was it a fixed service?

I get 450 on mine as well with some hard driving.

It looks like my car is on variable servicing, I've paid £37 a month for ten months and have not needed to claim for servicing yet so I'm trying to stop paying up front and get my money back.

I'd rather pay for servicing as and when I need it.

Let you know what happens.

Think the most i've got out of mine is about 340ish probably less, other than that i find it a battle to get about 310, i've got the 1.2 65bhp polo

Yeah,

I got 485 miles on my tank today, and so far the avge is 59.0

I am well impressed, though the predicted range seems to drastically reduce as you approach the amber light warning.

Cheers

is your average of 59 for the tank of diesel you've just used or total mileage.

My average is based on 13,000 miles

It's the total figure, I have covered just over 4100 miles, and it seems to get better all the time - mpg & performance.

Did my first 'proper' fuel test this month at 20,000 miles. I have a 1.2 55bhp (with no spare wheel) and I got 460 miles out of a tank

However I might add that
a) The car was filled to the BRIM! (i.e. fully vented)
b) Car was run right up until it the tank was almost empty (well, prob about 5-10 miles left)
c) Gearchanges were done at 3000/3500rpm, car was driven like it was a bomb and all national limits were obeyed :)

Quite a good result I think! I might add I get much more realistic figures when driving normally (overtaking/hard acceleration etc), probably around the 340-360 miles).

I've gotta add though, there is something wierdly relaxing about driving pretty slow and to the speed limit! Perhaps I'm getting old!

I agree! When I'm in a petrol saving mood I sometimes enjoy driving slow, changing up at 3k, and just generally driving like a granny.

Nothing relaxing about driving at any speed in my car (that'll be the 17s and exhaust then)

On a 1.4tdi Polo do a 'Ventectomy'. You will get another 9 or 10 litres in the tank.

I got 380 miles out of £28 Optimax in my FSi 1.4. This was just after the refuel light came on so there was probably another 25 miles in the tank.

But it's difficult driving like an old man for a full tank and the best I've got since then is 350. Hopefully it will go up some more! :P

I think there is another thread on here somewhere about this.

A good question would be how much can you put in your tank?? They are meant to be 45 litres but I've only been able to put in about 37 litres at most, and this is when the tank is almost empty. I've tried letting the air out of the tank but it doesnt allow much more to go in.

In my old mk5 1.0 I could put 46 litres in when it was almost empty (same size tank) But then you don't really want 46+ litres of petrol in a 1.0 (very slow)

Also optimax around here is 0.78p per litre. It was more like .89 in Ipswich!

James.
Sorry to bring up such an old thread but I laughed when I saw the price of petrol here compared to now! 78p a litre! They were the days!
