Hello, I'm from Brazil and we have the 1.6 8v EA-111 engine on the vw Lineup still today. This engine uses a GTI 6n2 block, wich was supposed originally from the AEE engine, and the head was based on a 1.4 8v roller rocker.

I find some info about that wich appears the first EA111 1.6 8v in Europe (check the AEE) but I don't know if the info is correct - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_di ... ol_engines

The history of this particulary engine (EA111 1.6 with 8v RSH) in Brazil starts like this:

- People in Brazil love low end torque, they don't like high rpms because they think "high rpms ruin the engine" and 16v engines has higher maintenance cost too, the other part of the problem is the mechanics that simply don't know how to handle with more advanced technic and technological improvments, that is the motive for a engine in 2011 with only 8v. People here do a lazy maintenance too, they wait to the car really broke to fix the problem, they don't change oil with regularity, filters, etc...This situation makes a less parts engine a excellent choice for the general brazilians. The engine here in Brazil needs to be bulletproof to handle this abuse.

- Year 2000, VW do Brazil imported the Golf IV from germany, the options was 1.6 SR, 2.0 8v and GTI 20v Turbo.

- The entry level Golf was equipped with a EA-113 1.6 SR, excelent engine, with 149mm rods (EA827 - 144mm) and the beautifully 81x77.4 architecture, it's a kind of EA-827 1.6 with alu block and longer rods, providing an wonderful R/L. The problem was the variable manifold, wich was expensive and not bulletproof as the rest of the engine.

-At this time VW build a new plant in Brazil to produce Golf IV, and need a more eficient and modern engine, because the only 1.6 produced in Brazil at this time was a EA-827 side flow 8v, nice engine, but VW thought this engine not suit these new products (Golf 1J/Polo 9N/9N2), so they start to manufacture here in Brazil the EA-111 1.6 with only 8v but RSH (roller cam followers). This engine has a flat range of torque and power, but has a worse R/L because the 138mm rods and long stroke. Not that good for high rpms, kinda harsh above 6.000 rpm, but has a nice torque range to everyday use.

- Besides the Golf IV, the EA 111 1.6 engine was used on Brazilian built Polo 9n too, we had three options: EA-111 1.0 16v (few produced), EA-111 1.6 RSH and the EA-113 2.0 8v (picture above)

- We at VolksPage, did a article in 2001 about the EA-111 1.6 8v engine, with google translator is easy to understand almost everything - http://www.volkspage.net/artigos/06/

Infos about this EA111 1.6 liter 8v (138mm rods):

- E-Gas
- 20mhz central unit
- RSH - roller rocker followers (less friction, more eficiency)
- More 4mm ground distance compared with 1.6 SR on Golf (good for our medieval roads)

Heres a Golf IV Comparo: EA-113 1.6 SR vs. EA-111 1.6 8v RSH

EA-113 1.6 8v SR (gasoline)
1595 cm³
81,0 x 77,0
10,3:1
101cv at 5600rpm
14,8 kgfm at 3800rpm
0-100 (km/h) 11.7
0-400 (m) 18.8
0-1000 (m) 33.7
60-100 (km/h) 4ª - 10.5
60-100 (km/h) 5ª - 14.7
60-120 (km/h) 4ª 16.2
V.Max (km/h / rpm) 184 / 5617

EA-111 1.6 8v RSH (gasoline)
1599 cm³
76,5 x 86,9
10,8:1
101cv at 5500rpm
14,2 kgfm a 3250rpm
0-100 (km/h) 11.7
0-400 (m)18.8
0-1000 (m) 33.9
60-100 (km/h) 4ª - 9.8
60-100 (km/h) 5ª - 13.8
60-120 (km/h) 4ª - 15.5
V. Max (km/h / rpm) 184 / 5838

- Since 2005, the EA-111 1.6 8v engine was converted to flex fuel, so you can run the engine with ethanol ou gasoline in any proportion, unlike the E85 versions around the world.

- Polo 9n EA-111 1.6 (138mm rods, Flex Fuel)
1599 cm³
76,5 x 86,9
10,8:1
103 cv (ethanol) 101cv at 5.750rpm
14.5 (ethanol) 14.3 kgfm at 3.250rpm

- The Brazilian Polo 9n was exported to various countries, as Africa, Morocco, and 9n2 (sedan) was exported to some countries of Europe, but don't sold so well as expected.

- In 2008, VW of Brazil made a update on the EA-111 1.6 8v engine, called VHT (Very High Torque), they increased the compression ratio, but the better modification was the new 152mm rods wich permits better R/L, smoother and freely running in all rpm ranges. Flex Fuel too.

- Polo 9n3 EA-111 1.6 VHT (152mm rods, Flex Fuel)
1599 cm³
76,5 x 86,9

15,6 (ethanol) 15.4 kgfm at 3.850rpm

- If you want to know more about the 9n, 9n2 and 9n3 Brazilian Specifications, or simple see the pictures of our versions, please tale a look here - http://www.volkspage.net/artigos/52/

Sorry for my english and I hope you like those infos !

Thread back from the dead! :D
anyways I also have a polo 1.6 sport 9n3 105ps and would like to know also the tuning potential to get out of these engines as i think making more bhp froma 1.6 is achieveable but dont know how many people have actually done it?

current mods air intake and cat back exhuast are the only engine mods .... would like to do more if theres anything out there?

even thought about supercharging it with a mini coooper S eaton supercharger .... hmmmm

fantastic post ignacio_volkspage!!

also are you aware of a camshaft difference between the VHT and non-VHT EA111? i read some where on a brazillian polo forum awhile ago something about a different camshaft?
