I think this is far less clear cut than bloody sunday (firing indiscriminately into a crowd armed with little more than banners is not on, at all - i hope our govt's "terrorism" obsession doesn't reach the levels it did in ireland... they at least had some real sustained campaigns to get heavy-handed about) ... it's just an unfortunate incident arising out of the situation london is currently in. However it does raise an interesting question of where the Guilty Until Proven Innocent line is crossed (rather than our current system of supposing innocence.. well - usually anyhow).

Why so desperate to get on a crowded train? Well.... hmmm
* police probably chasing him from other direction
* he doesn't know they're police - they didn't identify themselves. this is london after all, there are still gangsters, perhaps he'd had some prior contact with a gang, that had gone sour and he was afraid of retribution... all he sees are people running and drawing guns...
* there's enough other people who have obviously been desperate to get on the train that morning, making it packed - he's no different. perhaps killing two birds with one stone, escaping angry mobsters and getting on the tube that will get him to work on time, instead of late again..

truth is we'll never know

and his visa IS in date, from most accounts that have followed it up, despite the funny cartoons arising from the theory.

I think we can soon say "hello police state" though. It's all too convenient that something like this will happen, whilst new labour is already trying for such measures ... they can take advantage of it whilst everyone's in headless chicken mode and not thinking rationally.

Interesting that none of this stuff went down when we were under threat from the IRA - instead we negotiated. How come we're not even considering that route this time round? (from our glorious fuhrer's angry speech this morning)
