(actually from giving it a hazing on the way back yesterday, i think gaz/logik/etcs suggestion of putting a GT 5-speed in would be a good idea... 4th is too long for sustaining high speed, but too low for comfortable cruising... need a slightly lower 4th for blasts and motorway hills, and a longer 5th for easier flat cruising. 8P *would* work, and be even better for cruising, but would also mean 4th being almost the same - just ever so slightly higher still)

ive got an 8p out of a 1.3 ranger- I will sell if anyones really interested, Im not sure of its condition though. :)

I've still got a good 4 speeder from an 84 Classic in my garage. Original 60K from new. Still FREE to a good home...

anyone know what year the input shaft spline changed size?

I think te milleage was around 60-70k, it seems in good order and changed gears fine [nice and close-not sloppy], but i have had the changing rods and gearstick shaft so its just a box now that has been fully degreased on the outside.

Hrm, right. You mean, the rods / shaft as in the rod attached to the gear stick, or the rod that is physically attached to the box itself that then attaches to the gearstick in turn? That makes little sense, but I'm sure you can translate it ;)

Il let the box go for £40 mabey less, let us know if your interested G C, im in swansea. Yeah, basically all you need then is the connecting rods- ive got one but its very sloppy- but you can have it, it just needs new bushes etc. The conversion should work then.

Yes, but you may need to change the clutch, as the input shaft splines changed at some point between the early and late model mk2's. You'd probably want to change the clutch while you're doing it anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Just realised it's polokris who wanted the eyebrow, so that would have made no sense ;) So many people between here and pembroke..

the input shaft splines are the same on mk1 ---> mk3. They didnt change until much later (beginning of mk5) What you have to watch out for is the size of the release bearing as its much smaller on cars with an early 180mm clutch, which the 84 classic probably has. Im not 100% sure the early release bearing will be compatible with a late clutch (because Ive not tried it). And you cant put a late release bearing on an early gearbox either as the forks that it attaches to are spaced differently.

Depending on the engine, the 84 classic will have the same ratios as youd expect on a "normal" 4-speed (unless like T said its a C formel E)

Oh and if you change the clutch to the early type (to make your car compatible with the older gearbox) you also have to change the flywheel to the early type as well. (Which i dont recommend as it is heavier)
