An update for you all:

After the parts turned up yesterday (new motor and replacement switch) I headed over to my sister's place and enlisted the help of her bloke to get the door back together again with the new motor in place. Swapped the motors over, got the mechanism back in the door and then tested it with... success! The window goes up and down fine, no problem. We got to work replacing the other parts and the trim, tidied up and called an end to a successful job

Today, I've had the window up and down maybe half-a-dozen times on various trips around the town, and tonight on arriving home, the window, which at this time was down (all the way), wouldn't rise again. On further investigation, the rubber trim on the inside of the window had gotten pulled down with the window as it dropped and was stopping the window from rising again. So I dug my leatherman tool out of the glovebox and used a blunt-edged file (so as not to scratch or damage the glass) to hook the trim back up into place, and hey presto the window rises again when the switch is operated.

BUT...

It got about 2/3rds of the way and started struggling again

Might have to strip the door down again and take another look. The cables and pulleys are all looking fine, and everything was greased up during last night's re-assembly job so I'm a bit stuck as to what is going on. The plastic clips holding the window to the regulator are A-OK by the way, no signs of any damage to them.

I might strip the door as far as getting all the trim off, before taking it to VW (with the regulator and window in place) and getting them to have a look - the idea being if I strip the door before going in, it will save me labour charges...

Thoughts?

sounds like what me and inder had tbh, are you sure the glass is secured properly?

lucky there was a small gap in the bracket thing, which allowed me to wrap it round with the ties and not stop any up/down movement - ties function like that expanding clip that broke on us (its made of grey plastic )

@Si_GTi - check it out m8, just in case. Happens if you slam the door with the window down. not the two bits that hold the glass, but bit further down in same line you will find a metal bracket with a square hole, the square hole attaches to the expanding plastic bit

I have just gone to my car.. attempted to put the passanger window down and.... nothing? Its the same when i use the switch on the passanger door... nothing.

You can hear the relay click when using both switches but the window is just stuck in the closed pozition

I have checked the fuses and tried apply pressure to help it on its way... but again nothing.

I know they are known for been rubbbish but i thought the problem was not staying up???

Can any1 help with this or have you had this problem?

hhmm.. before assuming the worse have you tried simply resetting it? Hold the drivers switches up (as letting the windows up), for around 5 seconds, the system resets itself, and it MAY start working again.

I know this thread is really old BUT I am having the exact same issue with the passenger window! There's a clicking noise but no action. It was working 100% fine until just the other day. Tried the reset thingy to no avail. What's the most likely cause of the problem?

I have the same issue, 'tis very annoying

Check the cables where they go through the door (in the rubber) you will need to carefully pull the rubber from the twist screw thingy, its a bit messy to sort out but you almost definitely have a broken wire in the rubber somewhere, this happened to me and my window was stuck down

Turned out to be the brown wire in the rubber that had snapped, i think it was an earth cable, there sounded like there was power there as it made the "click" sound, i found it after hours of stripping the door down and was about to give up until i decided to check the rubber in the door.

After finding the snapped cabled, i just just a bullet connector and then taped it up, been fine ever since
