As far as the gearbox is concerned, anything from a mk1/2/3 polo, early mk4 1.0/1.3 polo, mk1/2 1.0/1.1/1.3 golf, mk3 1.4 golf (possibly only earlier models? Not sure.) and possibly ibiza's if they were fitted with the 1.4 engine from the golf. Basically if it looks the same, it's from a small engine and it's about the right age then it almost certainly will fit, you just have to make your own mind up about the ratios.

i dont think the mk1s/early mk2s will mate up to a mk3, will they? wrong shaft sizes or something

good news on the golf front tho :) just think they'll almost all be too tall, but for the earlier 1.1 and 1.3 jobs.

i know the ibizas got the 1043 and 1272 engines, at least early on

hmmm

If you haven't found a suitable gearbox then you can have the 4p from my garage sunday, as I'm back for the weekend (I'll try not getting a speeding ticket again   ).

Fiddlesticks, my mistake. I wrote that after a couple of whiskeys. Must stop drinking and then using the forums..
They will fit though, you just need to fit the flywheel and clutch from the early car as well which isn't a big job but a bit of a silly one because they're smaller, heavier and you won't find a 5 speed box on an early polo or small block golf. Moral of the story: Ignore the carrot.

Assuming early mk3 golfs and seat ibizas (92-97ish) have rod-change mechanisms, you can use any of their 085 boxes on a mk2 or mk3 polo. (more fiddling is required on earlier cars due to the flywheel clutch and release bearing all needing to be replaced with newer items (hydro head stuff)

I think the only box with taller ratios than 8P on these cars is the one fitted to the 1.6 golf (and ibiza as well presumably) And its not much taller (Same gears but longer final drive, makes about 1mph difference per 1000rpm in top) The 1.4 golf has 8P ratios (but not an 8P box) and the 1.4 Ibiza has slightly shorter ratios than an 8P from memory.

hm, interesting :) i'll just stick to newer ones to be on the safe side.
i think ignorage only when drunk. maybe.

danw - whats a 4p? :) appreciate the offer but dont quite understand!

gaz - looks like an ibiza one would have been the outright winner if its setup as i suspect it is, but i'm negotiating with g40dave off porka for his CEG now (gotta find some way of getting to and from reading area without raising suspicion or getting a ticket / wasting a huge amount of fuel - good job he's asking £60 not £80 or more otherwise the overall cost would just be silly)

you said before the CEG was an 8P style one - thats for definate, yes? i'm thinking along those lines too from other evidence i have, but he says its a GT one with "shorter ratios" (perhaps its an ibiza type one???) so its best to be certain.

thanks for the helps!

still havent got the old box off - will be trying that tomorrow night whilst mums out at gym, if i get back from college before she goes and i can figure out something to prop under the engine

(nah, i think they're pretty funky, but i'd never dare use them myself, just too high a cheese value)
they are the seats which came with my old blue mk3! shame they aren't a bit sporty in shape, they would look great!

I was there this afternoon. The shagged out squareback is still there(it's only got 70,000 miles on the clock) but no sign of the saloon at all :(
The red Boulevard is actually flash red and not faded tornado red. Shame really as most of the panels on it are in very good condition. Couple of early breadvans too(both A registration I think)

can only hope against hope it was rescued by someone willing to spring for a new door, refill the fluids, and buy back the gearknob & mirrors from looms "small parts" depository :D
