i'm 19 and i write virtually in constant text language when i use msn, but on here i write using english because theres no rush and it's rude to other members, occaisionally i slip in a "u" and "r" but i always change it in the preview. i don't mind the occaisional word but it's just stupid when people write entire posts in "iz, r's and u's" you've got no character limit and you've got all day to write it if you want.

Exactly. There is no 160 character limit (like on texts), no real need to abbreviate anything, and if you write out a post in regular English rather than using a whole bunch of abbreviations and shortcuts, you have more chance of other forum users better understanding your post! This is especially important when asking technical advice, for example.

It does my nut too, as mentioned it takes longer to read a post full of abbreviations and txt-speak because you have to decifer everything first

But it all comes down to personal preference really. If you choose to write you rposts in txt-speak, so be it. You just might have to re-write it for us old gits

hmmmmm Does it really matter? I personally think its worse when people dont break up there paragraphs with spaces ! and end up writing in massive chunks.

As long as it obvious what the word is supposed to be when you abbreviate, then there shouldnt be a problem !

Good question. Some of the other car forums I read have quite a few members who don't speak english as a first language (worth attracting them as it's always handy to have german-speakers on a VW forum ).

The other thing is, as said above, I'm dyslexic. A post in "txt-speak" means absolutely nothing to me. Yet I take my time to type my posts in Word and go back and sort the speeling erurs out so everyone else can understand mine.

but writing in full english can be a slow process sometimes Omicron, if your in work like me and have to quickly leave a message its normally quicker to just write it however.

I have a friend who is dyslexic and i just rang him as i was writing this message, he duely informed me that all the people in his old class that were also dyslexic and also himself, found it easier to read txt talk rather than full english.

Not really sure where your coming from mate, txt speak spells words near enuff (<---- just like that) how they sound, so surelt it should be easier if your not good at reading words or spelling?

To be honest im not really the worst offender on here for txt speak, as you can see from my post, most of the time i do write in full english.

Just thought it silly that this point was brought up and that someone blaming their dyslexia sounded a bit wierd.

It's more when 4 or 5 letter words are broken down into 2/3 letters.

I was waiting for someone to mention Tahrey , I think he demonstrates well that there is no character limit, and you can post as much as you want.

Weird, but then I'm not a "normal" anything, so why should I be a "normal" dyslexic There's not many of us who are in the process of writing their second 400-page novel

Most forums i grace have banned text speak, mainly because of the influx of young teenage girls with unhealthy obsessions.

Im against the use of it. This isn't a mobile phone.

I don't even use text speak on a mobile phone, it's all about the predictive text! It's far easier and quicker!

CAPS lock is bad enough

I'll say don't shout or similar in the post and PM the poster with the forum guide to posting eticate - they either get it right next post or I delete the post - I have been known to do that several times - then I get a PM responding saying my posts keep disappearing - I respond politely that it's a forum feature and all CAPS posts are deleted automatically

on posts written in txt I'll have a scan if I can be bothered and there looks to be some meritable content but most of the time unfortunately there isn't

I can't PM the person that posted and say it's not english cos the forum eticate guide doesn't say anything about it

I don't like being sarky and saying "again please in a language I can understand"

So I tend to ignore posts by that person untill he realises it's not the normal eticate - peer presure helps

CAPS & txt tlk is well - bloody rare and please see action to post written in CAPS - at least I can sort one of the two
