The water pump was £46.65 inc vat when I got it done, also just noticed they replaced the aux belts aswell at the same time.

The noise you decribe sexkitten does sound like the tensioners its hard to tell with out hearing it though, these can go with age and not milage. I would get your timing belt/tensioners/water pump done ASAP theys should replaced at 60k or 5 years but there was a post early that said VW garages have been advised to do the Polos after 4 years.

If I was to buy another Polo GTi this would be the first thing I would do even if it didn't make a noise after reading some of the posts here and having a near miss with mine !

my cambelt went at 32k but was replaced under warrenty (with previous owner) so does this mean i dont need to get it done at 60k service?

Just been to vw got both belts and tensioners for £56 and getin it fitted sunday for £70 by my vw/skoda mate!

Helps when you make friends with your local vw parts man!

cost me 150 quid all in for all the bits and i bought the locking pins and did it myself, still havnt fitted the belly plate back, just watching the speed bumps meeting the sump

I'm just approaching 50K and am gonna get my cambelt, tensioners, water pump and timing belts changed.

Would you guys advise me to get the parts from Vag-parts and then take it to a VW specialist to fit when i have my service done,

Or

Just go to VW and get them to do everything.

i had this problem at 60k it was a cambelt tensioner failure get it checked out asap

cos it could go at anytime!!!!

cost me £280 from a VW dealer this included cambelt kit and water pump and new coolant. (i got discounted parts though)

Would the cambelt be covered under the warrenty, or does this come under the 'wear & tear' clause

Damn thats some expensive business, makes me feel a little better about paying for my repairs yesterday.
My head gasket was gone so needed that changed & the mechanic that was doing it suggested changing the cambelt along the way. So I got the new head gasket, cambelt, alternator belt, thermostat + housing + the plastic surround...done for £150.
So maybe I didn't come off too bad...considering...

This is going to sound real stupid, but I'm thinking of getting mine done (it's on just under 52k) but what would I actually have to ask VW to give me a quote for? Are the tensioners/water pump all part of the cambelt change?

My tech knowledge is pretty non-existent

yeah... cambelt is near the engine... so when you get that done you might aswell get the cambelt tensioner changed aswell... So ask for a quote to get your cambelt changed & say that price includes getting the tensioner done aswell?
Also if gti is anything like the mk4... water pump is in such a akward position (like under the engine lol) so get them to double check that.

I phoned a couple of places today to ask if the water pump was included in the price for the cambelt change ( £220 + VAT for the cambelt, timing belts & tensioners). Water pump was an extra £30. All in £293.75p Including VAT.

That was the cheapest, £340 the most expensive.
