Nice car, nice bit of early restoration, and all this from a yungun :D

You could be set to be the next mk1 god, having come from nothing in 6 months to that... (it took me 6 months just to find engine parts for a mk3 - well done lad!)

To be perfectly honest i still no nothing about how a car actually works and how the different parts effect the engine..

I've done alot, but it's been mainly down to the Haynes Manual, my father and a good friend of mine who owns and runs a MOT Garage & Breakers Yard.. And conversing with the original owner next door..

Bare in mind most of the stuff i have done is asethetic.. bar the I.C.E & exhaust, air filter, head gasket and some replacement of pipelines in the engine..

The hardest thing was the I.C.E as i had no manual for my CD Player (and even when i did get one, it didnt make sense as my car had such old and mysterious wiring..) but i got that sorted with abit of explanation and help from a friend and the guy at the breakers yard..

Let me tell you now, your MOT man is wrong. Rust is not only likely to spread, but it WILL spread indeffinately. It always starts from the smallest bit of bubbling or stonechip, and if left untreated soon gets a lot worse. He probably doesn't see it as worthy of repair because its only quite small areas effected, plus its just another (albeit tidy) old car to him
that is of little value.

Well realistically the expense of getting someone to sort out all the rusted areas on the side of the car and underneith the car isn't going to be worth it..

Im not sure how expensive it will be but it will likely be too much for my income as a student..

What i am tempted to do is to have the car completely resprayed and stripped down, that way the rust would be dealt with and i could have a lovely new coat of paint to go with an "almost new condition" car..

But that would set me back £1,500-£2,000

The only real rust is to the rear of the wheel arches, the guy at the MOT said it's not worth treating as it's more hassle than its worth.. due to the fact you'd have to either replace the wheel arch or more likely recreate the rusted area with some welding..

He said its not going to effect the structure of the car itself, but the outter rust on the paintwork thats started to show up can be dealth with..
