What light is this? As you can see, i'm still not quite used to the car yet. What does the warning light look like? I've been told by someone that newer cars don't have this light? :?

The google image search only showed the old beetle, and even that, couldn't find any image to show the sign of the warning light.

on my mk2 it turns off as soon as you start the engine because obviously it's charging then...if it doesn't turn off then your alternator isn't working properly mate :)

Hi, i'm back.

The battery light goes out after the car has been started. I'm thinking that the alternator has gone. On my car, the light next to the battery light (i think it's coolant), carries on flashing. I take it the engine coolant level is low aswell?

I also just replaced a fuse (yellow type, number 20) for the central locking. The alarm seems to be working fine. Do those solar battery charges on ebay actually work? They've got some special VW ones up.

How hard of a job is it fitting the alternator? Would i need to jack the car up?

Anyone know of any mechanics within Birmingham who would have a look at it for next to nothing?

P.S. Managed to burn my hand on the engine too.... not pleasant

Have drawn the lite on the dash and circled it
