A Ford Puma 1.7 Millenium.......its is no way as well built as a Polo GTI....but it is more reliable....thats my opinion anyway.

Two websites isn't exactly gonna tell you a lot

You bought a Ford? Much more reliable than a VW?

There is a difference between hearing a bad word and giving the car a chance.

Well the advantage of buying a Fiesta in drag, is that it's cheap to fix when it breaks.
With regards to the GTi being unreliable, there are as others have said, problems with virtually every car built. Granted there is also a fair number of members of this board who have had issues with gearbox reliability. I'm not sure you can generalise that to all GTi's though. There are also a strong body of owners on here who have not had any gearbox problems.
Yes you've had a bad experience with your car, and as they say if you can't take the heat then get out the kitchen. I just wouldn't be expecting every other GTi owner to follow you.

While I would also agree that selling the car so fast was an over-reaction (once you get to know the gti you WILL get attached to it). I still think you are correct, the GTi % 6n2 gearbox in general is pants, its notchy and there have been plenty of stories of failed boxes. We all know how crap the clutch is (stiff and lets not forget the pedal box).
However, all cars have their problems. The replacement you have just got is notorious for develping leaks on the inside (do a google search). Also it had a master cylinder recall on the 1998 models and the rear parcel shelf also falls off and rattles (design fault). BUT its a super handling car (better on the twisties than the polo, and its also a pretty timeless design. So you have a good car, but the gti was a good car too you just got cold feet :'(

I'll second that, if everybody sold their cars after the first problem then we'd go through thousands of cars in a lifetime.
IMO the time to research a car is before you buy it, not after your gearbox fails, why not save yourself £5k+ in the first place.

Modern VW's are not the 'force' that they once were, they are 'mediocre cars' at best, you cannot compare the build quality on a early/mid 1990's VW Golf/Polo to a modern day VW Golf/Polo.
Visit

Also Fords are as Good, if not better than modern day VW's.
