Looking at VW pricing it seems a basic 3 dr Gti Golf is UKP5000+ more than the base Polo GTi. I asssume that is still a fair whack of money over there. The Polo is also similarly priced to the Fiesta ST. In reality this is the market it is aimed at.
The Clio 197 will not be faster than the Megane 225. If anything it maybe slightly slower than the Clio 182. Will it be as good as the Old 182? Who knows, the 225 sure didn't hit the mark. Remember there is as near to zero upgradeability for the 197. The polo has a plethora of upgrade options.
VW does seem to price its vehicles at a premium.. doesn't seem to hurt sales of the the Golf Gti. The quality of the Polo is a order of magnitude better than the CLio 182.
New for new the golf gti is around 4-£5,000 more than the polo gti. The problem is that it's overpriced and people would rather spend there money on something bigger and better. A fully loaded polo gti would cost the best part of £18,000+ which is used golf gti territory, it would also buy you a well specced MK4 R32, I know which I'd rather have.
A basic Fiesta ST is around £13,500 and the Clio 182 about the same but the polo is about £1,500 more with a lower spec.
We all know how 'upgradeable' the 1.8T is but pound for pound compared to it's rivals the polo just doesn't cut it

unless they drop it's price £1,500

New for new.. the Golf is more than UKP5000 more
The question is why you would upspec the Polo? If so, why wouldn't you also upspec a Golf? For instance leather.. Either way the gap stays the same or grows.
AS for the Fiesta... you could apply exactly the same logic to it!! It's only UKP 4000 to upspec that to a Focus ST! And don't forget to factor in the optional ESP and side airbags the Polo gets as standard.
It all evens out in the wash.

Well I would want leather, better alloys and Xenons so I'd imagine that's at least 4k of extra's which takes the price up to around 19k. There's not many people who are going to pay that for a polo when you can get a year old Golf GTI with a similar spec or a brand new Focus ST with plenty of options.
As said previously it's overpriced and underspecced for the UK hot-hatch market. Surely you could of bought a Holden for the price you paid for your polo? Nice V8 power

I bought an Autocar from 2000 off ebay with the 6N2 GTI review in it. They said at just under 14k it was overpriced. If only they could look into the future...

lets see. Cheapest V8 commodore is $45,000. Cheapest Polo Gti is $27000.
Just worked out the price we pay in Oz for a polo GTi in pounds. Works out to approx UKP11,000. Golf Gti works out to UKP16000.
You guys do get shafted! And curtain airbags and cruise control are standard
And for further comparison the Polo is about 20% cheaper than a Clio 182.
Here, a Polo Gti is a bargain.
Yeah 125bhp is quite impressive for a n/a 1.6. Only Honda really do more than that
Toyota was getting that out (and more!)of a 1.6L in the corolla in 1989! Honda was getting more like 160hp out of a 1.6L.

Thats the sort of price it should be over here, shame it isn't.
125bhp is pretty poor from a 1.6 engine, Honda get 160bhp from there VTEC engines and the SIR VTEC imports kick out around 170bhp standard. IMO the GTI should be kicking out at least 170bhp in standard form

Then again the 1.6 Polo Gti engine maybe tuned more for torques than all out power

Unfortunately its not that simple. The Oz dollar exchange rate is very weak.

Not sure how that works as i simply converted the UK price using the current exchange rate. I know it's not that simple but... you guys seem to pay alot for small/medium cars.
If you compare the price of the Polo in Japan it works out to just about the same as we pay here when converted JPY <-> AUD
