Very nice,
could you find out what part of the exhaust it was by any chance?

When driving (in gear at any speed) I get a light grinding noise from under the car (could be clutch / gearbox area). It gets nosier as I accelerate until the engine note is loud enough to override it.
If I take the car out of gear the noise disappears completely (I can move the clutch up and down without any noises too)
The clutch seems fine, as does the gearbox, gear changes are sometimes rough / clunky but I believe this is a normal for gti.
Anyone know what it could be? Hopefully it’s a cheap fix.
Thanks in advance,
Joe
From the description, I reckon its the gearbox bearings. Quite costly and a common problem with the MK4 / MK5s, I've experienced it before on my MK4.
Its costly because it involves reconditioning the gearbox in most cases, however i'd say try Gearbox oil treatment, which tends to quiet it down or remove it almost completely if it ain't too bad. Get it checked out though, as if it is this it will only get worser the more you carry on.

the noise comes from the front passenger side. although i said in my last post that the noise comes in 2nd and 3rd gear it happens stationary too if you rev to a certain RPM and hold it there

With a new car it's also a good idea to have the transmission oil changed after the first year to get rid of any swarf which could later be ground up into tiny particles which eventually get into the bearings and accelerate wear.

Just to update,
got my GTi back today from fitting the Sachs kit to the AVY engine (just in case anyone is having problems finding out if it will fit) all great, much better - reverse doesnt crunch now - amazing. Also got the gearbox oil changed with fully syn. Good advice DubGTi. Complete world of a difference, no grinding noise either - so may have been either clutch or gb, either way if you decide to get your clutch done, I also recommend getting the oil changed.

Did it solve the creaking pedal problem as well?
I think i should get mine done, How much was the labour?

Yeh that creaking pedal was caused by the heavy clutch. It was the counter lever arm on the gearbox that was taking the strain and the joint was creaking. The area was just greased up when the clutch was changed. Labour was £160, suggest maybe getting a cable too while your at it, not much extra.

Sorry to bump this.. but just drove home naw and i think my car is sufferring from this. except mine is a very loud noise.. when i take my foot off the throttle at any revs it just whines and grinds at me. gear changes dont seem any harder but it happens in all gears. clutch pedal feels fine. its come on really sudden.
any others sorted this out?
Thanks
