Hmmm - i'd be scepticle mate, i got told this aswell but i knew it was gearbox based.
My clutch release bearing is in A1 conditon so i would get a second opinion - did you try VW?
I'll try as many pics as i can mate

yeah, glad i could be of help diagnosing the problem. It could happen at anytime really although you woulnt expect it at 36k. Depends how the car was driven before you got it. If the car had been stood for ages you may get a whining noise. i had an xr3 and that was stood for about a month and developed a whine but it went after about 1000 miles?
they generally get louder though until you cant bear it anymore.
If i was you id leave it til you get to that point then think about fixing it cos its unlikely to collapse without giving you audible warning. No point spending that hard earned cash if you dont have to......

Thanks mate...yeh the car was idle for a long time, it had been sitting in the sellers driveway for a few months so that could cause the whining too...im gonna leave it a while and wait and see...when i have a bit more dough ill get it replaced.
