Most recon boxes aren't recon'd at all they are just 2nd hand from written off cars etc and will at some point end up needing the bearings replaced like the original boxes. If you get your box recon'd it should last at least another 50k. I would also change the clutch whens its off with a sach one which is under £100 from euro car parts.
Cheers Dave,

Thats probably what happened with my first gearbox i put in last year.
Recond they said it was.
Recond my arse. :(

But you've really just gotta take the company's word for it, that they've recond it dont ya ? :?

As for the 2nd gear syncro.
What you mean by that ? :?
As i had a 91 8valver Gti Mk2 with a crunch in 2nd every time you floored it through gears, but was no crunch in normal driving.
Would that have be a dodgy syncro ?

That would be the syncro causing that a very common fault on the MK2 GTi boxes, I have been told the Polos GTIs boxes have a similair weak syncro I know my old Polos box would crunch from 1st to 2nd when it was cold when it only had 18k onit the dealer told me this was a "characteristic" they changed the gearbox oil for thinner stuff (same trick you could use on a MK2 box funnily enough) and it stopped it bar maybe the odd crunch on a very cold morning (-8c) but it was always a little notchy until it was warm.

Got my recon box from volkspares £450 + vat. They sounded like they knew what they were on about unlike most of the companies i rang. They took my old box as exchange. Also fitted a sachs clutch while it was out and the car drives luvly naw.

before my gti i had a 1.6 8v polo glx it also had alot of gear box issues it had 2 in 14 months. 3d tranmissions are a good place to go to get it sorted.
