I had my cambelt/water pump assembly changed at 51k after the cambelt tensioner failed. All done under warranty couple of years back, now at 78k and no trouble :)

I've just had mine changed at 63k.

I got the full kit changed as I've heard the tensioners are prone to failing.

The guy who did it quoted me £250 all in which was the best deal I could find after phoning up half a dozen garages.

to be honest, i didnt have any noises relating to the cam belt. i just learnt from previous mistakes. when i had a mk 4 1.6 8v, the cam belt snapped @ 72000m  . luckily, i was stationary as it happened. however, they didnt change waterpump. 1yr later, i started to get a quiet whirring sound on acceleration, and sure enough, water pump was required, and it hah leaked onto cambelt. i had to get that done again aswell :x . your local garage should be able to check for signs of wear. but....in all honesty, its just not worth the risk. vw are renowned for leaky water pumps. just get it done, coz it will save you alot of time and money!

You're not joking mate! Luckily, the guy who changed my cambelt noticed that the water pump was leaking and changed it at the same time.

Mine will be getting done at the end of next month along with my 60k service, been quoted £195 for it from the garage we've been going to for years.

Sexkitten - I've had a whirring sound on acceleration since I bought the car, its not very loud or obtrusive and with music on you can't really hear it so I didn't think it was anything to be too worried about. When you take your foot off the accelerator to slow down the noise changes very slightly but its hard to describe.

I also have a similar noise. its like a high pitch humming. gets slightly louder and higher as you go faster. I've had the car serviced and got my merc mechanic mate to look, and my other half, and we cant find anything wrong. I've just put it down to the car's characteristics!!!
