Total is £1162.07 including all labour at 42.50/hour + VAT and it's gonna be 8.5 hours work. That works out £424.49.

Other costs he gave me:

- around £400 for belts including water pump and labour
- £163 for headlamp
- £99.03 for the bulb (this will only get ordered if the old one won't work)
- £100 for air con re-gas
- £15 pollen filter
- £15 anti-freeze
- £80.1 for rear discs and pads w/10% discount
- £12.50 for brake fluid
- £50.30 for MOT
- labour for everything other than belts = £227.14

Phew!

edit: worked that out as 4 hours work for the belts and 4.5 hours to do everything else
Thats expensive , my VW dealer charged £320 for the timing belt/water pump. The parts including the water pump are £150 from a vag dealer so they are charging you 6 hours labour for the timing belt swap.

You can get a aircon regas for £50-60, the back discs/pads £50 tops from vagparts.com

I would be surprised if a new headlight unit would resolve the problem as the ballast which effectively runs the xenon bulb is a separate sealed unit. As fair as I am aware the only parts in the headlight unit itself is the bulb and ignitor. The usual course of action is to swap these with the working headunit to find out what part is faulty. From the symtoms you described in a previous post it sounds like the ignitor is faulty. You can also get the bulb on the net for around £60

Hmm dunno what to do now. MOT is due on Friday so put it in early. It'll probably be next week before I get the parts and then I'd have to rebook it all in

How much is a pollen filter and is it easy to fit?

I had my timing belt done at a VW main dealer for £170

Was that just one belt? He told me there are a few different ones that all need to be replaced

My parents are telling me that the garage won't do the job if I waited and got the parts and asked them to fit it  I'll just go ahead with the brakes and stuff because I don't want the hassle of having to drive in and out all the time as I got Uni and work

Can't bloody win!

gutted for you mouse tbh i don't know of any garages near me that will let you buy the parts then get them to fit it for the following reasons:-

1) they wont guarantee their work because it isn't their parts
2) this is where they can make some money on you - so to compensate they will charge a higher fitting cost

If it were me, i'd just bite the bullet and get what needs to be done out the way and get your m.o.t. done, then save up and get the other things done - air con regas etc aren't essential - it can wait till you next get paid. Just my opinion. Either way hope you get it sorted.

They have done the re-gas, damn! Was gonna get them to cancel the brakes and source them myself etc but it has to be done or the car will fail its MOT - the same goes with the headlamp. My parents offered to pay for the pollen filter so I was like fair enough. They think £49 an hour inc VAT is pretty good, hopefully they will take less time. Gonna invest in some proper axle stands so I can save more money in the future.

What's good is that it maybe expensive but it's a trusted specialist and not some pikey garage kerbing your wheels and using non OEM parts. Plus cambelt and air con won't need touched for a while and headlamp should be a one off. Just got to grin and bear it

Grr so pissed off. Came back from Uni expecting my car for my parents to tell me it ain't ready. They don't have a locking wheel nut so they have to break the old ones and replace them meaning another £70! I'm livid!

How did they come to that figure  ? My locking wheel nut key was knackered and I couldn't get a replacement from VW. It took my Mechanic no more than 10 minutes to get them off and it cost me a fiver. A new set of locking wheel nuts is less than £30 from the main dealers.
