Not unknown for them to fail quickly after being fitted, you could rule it out by reving the engine to 2.5k with it stationary. If it was me I would get a friend to rev the engine at various revs with the clutch engaged and dis-engaged when you listen about the engine bay. If the engine is ruled out then start to check the bearings/drive chain.

I had a play around with it, the sound is actually just below 2000rpm, its done even stationary in neutral...and you can only hear it with the windows up and the stereo off, you can't hear it from outside the car!

will have to have a try with mine stationary and see if i still get the noise. would love to see if its actually the same noise.

My exhaust should be fine as I just had MOT and Service and I would have thought they'd have picked up on it.

Mine does this too, no idea what it is either. sounds almost like something resonating once the accelerator pedal is released at low rpm. Has been doing it since I owned it.. wierd

My Gti has made this sound since I got it last June 06 with 21K on a 51 plate. Sent it back as it had a years warranty and they claimed to fix it saying it was a split vacuum pipe. The noise did go quieter but has recently got louder again. As it is still under warranty I'm sending it back again and I'll post what they find.

Must be a common fault because mine does it too. I might take the dash apart and see if anything is rubbing or rattling around behide it.
