Why doesn't the lupo gti 6 speed gearbox fit? It's exactly the same engine as the polo gti. My gearbox is on it's last legs now and i've asked my VW mechanic to find out if the lupo gti box will fit into my polo gti. He told me he'll do some research for me. I only want a realiable car with no engine or gearbox problems, but also I want the fun you can have with the GTI :D

Different bottom end and bell housing.
Its not "Exactly" the same.
also it has a hydrolic clutch rather than cable.
It also has rod change selection rather than cables.

umm im not sure exactly what happened, im not very good with engines!! i know that i broke a hole in my bell housing?? something to do with the differential as you can tell when you put it on full lock or something!! my mate works at vw so he just takes care of everything for me!

ye but i think vw must have known the gearbox isnt great and thats why the lupo has the 6speed?
what gearbox do all the rally 6n2s use?

First motion shaft bearings on first box, diff bearings on 2nd box. Fifth gear bearing melted on 3rd box, now on recon of 3rd box!

The rally 6n2's use custom straight cut gearbox's. Good look finding a used one for less than a few grand. Plus it will be noisy as f**k (unless you want a supercharger style whine from your gearbox constantly)

Best option for all Polo gearbox's is to have them updated. There are companies that will strip them down when broken and refurb with after market bearings etc which are stronger than stock ones

The original bearings are timkin bearings. There pretty much the best you can get. The only one you can 'upgrade' really is the fifth gear needle roller, which is originally plastic. The box design is rubbish and cant handle lots if power. The only way to make it last is to regularly change the oil (like every 10-20k miles) and use an additive like slick 50. I recently rebuilt my box and intend to change the oil every 10k

Are you using 2nd hand boxes? That was my problem. I replaced every bearing in the box the last time round. Ensure whoever rebuilt yours (if they did) did this. The design of the box isnt that bad, and it should last if the oil's always clean.

vw main dealer sourced the box....yes its a recon they dont make the boxes brand new anymore
