i'd go for Resonant engineering over JL every time
as for tuning i mean the tuning frequency of the box the size of the enclosure size of port length of port tuning for spl sql street bass etc
as for 6x9's big no no for a decent setup there only good for cheap sounds
if you want to get serious advice get on

there is nothing wrong with 6x9s or alpine! you just have to set them all up properly.
i have pioneer all through my car inc amps, subs, 6x9s and ickle ones in the front and my boyfriend has alpine in his car, there is nothing wrong with my sound quality or his.
im like you i dont like a lot of bass and i wanted it bassy but not overbassy.
ross who had it before me did a fab job on the sound in mine (my boyfriend tweaked it) and now it sounds amazing and no matter what plays in the song bass, lyrics etc, it sounds awsome and iv had loads of comments to that effect as well.
ur all very one minded!
there are lots of ways and lots of brands that can be used.. it depends on your personal choice really. go out and listen to what different peoples sound like and if u like it then ask what they did.

ya ive onlt got 6x9s so far and the rear sound is really good and they can get pretty loud and bassy before they start distorting. For now though its all just too expensive and i dnt have the cash. maybe someday though or over the summer when im off collage

you can say all this about 6x9's but have you ever heard a pure sq setup as you can easily tell the difference in sound quality compared to your atandard stereo / basic aftermarket
6x9's are fine if you don't want the lows and just want some volume
add a sub and they need to go as they'll be getting pushed by the sub which is going to make the sound worse and damage the 6x9's
if you are really serious about ice get on talkaudio to get all the proven facts and info from the experts that have tried and tested everything there comenting on
everyone has personal taste but not everyone has tried all the installs they are trying to comment on but are happy with what they have.
www.talkaudio.co.uk if you like street bass, sq, spl, if it's car audio it's all there
