Well car is stripped in the garage, and has already had a new flywheel and clutch fitted...so they now think it's the gearbox...which was sent the gearbox specialist who says its fine but will change a few bearings inside. the only thing they said was that it has a solid flywheel ( i'm assuming this means a single rather than a dual mass flywheel) setup. the only thing i can think of is replace it with the dual mass flywheel kit from LUK that i supplied to them...

your thoughts please...... :(

Thanks

As you know there is quite a lot of Tdi's with this problem mine being one of them and personally im not going to fix it till something stops working in my car, I spoke to a Vw guy and he suggested that where the thrust bearing sits it doesnt sit tight enough against something so thats what lets it have the room to spin and then hear the noise. Did your clutch/gearbox not perform well or that before you started replacing the bits? The noise is annoying but ill put up with it cos my car is going really good the now.

Hi Claire

the noise i could of put up with but putting car in gear after it had warmed up had started to annoy me as they became sticky through change. got the car back yesterday with the new dual mass flywheel clutch kit and new release bearing, the gearbox also had the lower gear change bearings replaced and i'm glad to say that has sorted this issue out! not sure if it was the fact there was a single solid flywheel rather than a dual mass flywheel or the gearbox lower gear bearing change that did it but i'm glad it feels like a new car.

:D

That's wierd, that it has already had a flywheel change! Maybe the previous owner has had it remapped and that along with rough driving ended up trashing the original DMF. The conversion back to solid flywheel seems to be the chosen route for quite a lot of remapped cars, but it is always acknowledged that the pay-off for haveing a ruggedised clutch was increased noise mainly at tick over, ie in neutral with clutch out. Glad you got it sorted out - now remember to protect that new DFM, I think that means no "hard launches" or shovel fulls of throttle at low speed and high gears.

Hey RUM4MO trust me no hard launches 8) i'm glad it's sorted now it feels a lot better like a new car! i thought it would have been a lot quicker for 100 BHP though, may hav to look into chipping it to 130BHP i think the new flywheel kit should be able to cope with that load? not really a racer but enjoy having the extra BHP when it's needed. it seems a waste to have a 1.9 pushing under it's capacity....

Cheers
