modifying is part of the fun though - if I had a car that didn't need any modding, I'd get bored!

If insurance is high on the Polo GTI I'd imagine it will be high on a Clio 182!!!

You should check the insurance first and either pay the high cost because it's the car you want or get a car that isn't going to cost a massive amount to insure.

i would probily get one but the only one i would get is a 172cup
as there the quickest
when i say quickest they are faster accelerating of the lot but miss out on top end by 1 / 2 mph is it really work it??? as top speed dont really matter

and probily the cheapest on insurance

Seconded, if you couldn't afford the GTi insurance then surely the 182 will be either of a similar amount or more.

the only clio i would drive would be the V6!!

my engine will be available next june if you want.....!??!

I'd happily purchase a Clio 182 Trophy. Rare, quick and immense handling.

And to be honest people go on about VW build quality/reliability but look at the Mk5 Polo GTi. Cam belt tensioner worries, gearbox failures and pedal box problems its hardly an example of faultless quality.

but even with all those faults people still love the GTI's..!?

My girlfriend has a 53-plate 172 Cup safe to say its fast, handles really well and you get a massive amount more feedback when you're driving it compared to the Polo GTi. The steering is nicely weighted up and the way it tackles corners is awesome, and thats with no modifications whatsoever

OK so the build quality *might* not be up there with VW, the interior feels plasticky and its very (read: VERY) light when compared directly to the Polo - your average crosswind is very easily felt - but its bloody great to drive

On the downside its a thirsty wee beast if you drive it how it should be!!

Go for a Cup car and you won't be disappointed. I was looking a few months back at the 182 Trophy, there are some nice standard examples out there for easily under £10,000...

I think I'm thinking of the 2005 Clio then rather than the 2003. But a quick look shows both have 4 star ratings.

i agree with tom, only clio worth getting is the v6 which probably will be my next car, but the fact is alex u wont have a hope in hell in getting insured on a 172/182 for at least 2 years

If i save hard enough itll be possible. I merely just wanted some input into what people think of them.

The way it looks is ill stay VW for a bit...maybe move up to a 1.6 sport or a TDI.

The current look is at a TDI as i do so many miles each week just all over the place - cheaper for me in the long run

I went from a 172 to the Polo Gti, the polo is much better built than a clio, i've had far less problems, there's lots to go wrong with the clio's, particularly engine management sensors etc. thought having said that the clio was alot of fun when it ran smoothly, but she does like the petrol station too.

If you want a fun car, thats quick but that can be very temperamental and isnt made as well as a VW go with the 182, but personally i'd never own another as an early day car, they go wrong far too often for my liking.
