I'd go with the 215 myself as I had 205s on my old TT Comps and the rims were really exposed to kerbs and anything else for that matter.
The Polo Dune uses 215 40 17s so it is a pretty VW friendly size!
For better protection from kerbs again then you could fit 225 35s but they're rare. I think they used to be fitted to Ford Cosworths.

hmmm, I think you'll be pushing the limit there. The 205x40x17s are a bit bigger than the smaller alloys and VW recommended tyre sizes as it is.
if you want 215 I say go for 35 profile, but that's just my opinion!

I think 'ceedubya' on here had 215 40 17's on his comps as he wanted more traction from his 300bhp 9N! Seem to remember him running them with no probs
Not to complicate things but I think the make of the tyre makes a difference too. The sidewalls on my Falkens lean in a lot more than my previous Yoko's and give a lot more arch clearance.

lol dont be mate, if the wheels are going for a good price get them, and if your not happy with the tyres sell them on.
I'd perosnally get some 205s but thats just me,
Also the tyres wouldn't be hard to sell on if you decided not to keep them

I am running 205 tyres now and they clear the arches enough to run a 10mm spacer on the rear wheels and still clear without rubbing. In terms of a 215 tyre 'fitting' I reckon you'll be fine...
You 'might' get some rubbing issues on the fronts if you run the car really slammed on coilovers with a 215 tyre but I still reckon you'd be just about ok even then.
In terms of looks, the 205 looks way better with the stretch but does mean the rims stick out a mile as I discovered the other day when I drove into a kerb

yeh thats the only issue with stretched tyres, they leave your wheels exposed. Mine wouldn't stand a chance if they bumped into a curb!!
I'm extra careful though

Well I've got 16's on, and am running 215's.
Theyre really good coz they grip the road sh*t hot
I do lose a hell of a lot of speed thru them tho, as they just seem to superglue to the road!
With the tiny 165's on there my 9n (1.2 6v) will do 100 quite easily, with the 215's on, it will only do about 85 on that exact same stretch of... track...
