Mk1 Golfs are no doubt gorgeous cars. but always overrated
I would still love one myself...But i agree with stani, you will miss the mod cons in the Olop. Ive had a Mk1 Cabriolet and a Mk3 Cabriolet Golf and even the difference between them is large in regards to what it has for comfort inside.
But... If you dont mind losing power steering, abs, climate control, good throttle response, good brakes haha etc then defo go for the Mk1 because they are iconic in motor history

...If you go Mk1 one and you want to spend big money i would look into VR6 or 1.8T conversions though.

My aim is to get a mint or excellent condition Mk1 Scirocco GLS or Storm when I get space/money

Cheers guys. I'm still real undecided about it all, saw an absolutely mint mark1 Polo today, doesn't make things easier!! There's no rush for this kinda thing. Like you said Tom it would benefit alot if i could afford to run two cars for this kinda project, so maybe i should wait abit.
Just holds me back a bit from making any major mods on the Polo

dude, i would stick with what you have got! or if you are serious about gettin a mk1 Golf/Polo i would drive one first as said before the Polo is more modern and you could well miss the mod-cons. My mate has a Mk1 golf for track days with g60 lump in. loves it for track hates it for road use and thats why he has MK5 GTi golf on the side. test drive one first and see if you can put up with it?

It wouldn't be much of an issue really because it would have a new engine, electric everything and a retrim for comfort!!
The plan is on hold though

Tim if u sell it u know u will want it back!
Just get the polo 2 the point were ur happy with it but dont go so far that it cant be a daily driver!
Then when and as money alows buy a mk1 golf or polo as a toy that can sit in the garage for months if u havent got the money or 2 be pulled out and played with when u do?
Best of both worlds!

i'm after a wrecked g40 as a second car.. i can't afford to buy a decent one so need a crap one. and i can't sell my car as i drive loads and need a tdi. so just stick it out and wait till you can afford both like others have said.

mk1 project, for sure. But make you can afford to do it properly, or dont bother.
Makes sense to keep the polo, while the mk1 is undergoing its overhaul too
