Snapped Cambelt on 2001 GTI :(

I know the pedal box has been done, as when the clutch started playing up a couple of months back I thought it was the pedal box at first, but turned out not to be (since contacted VW and they said it was changed under warranty in 2004)

Not sure about the gearbox - can't find any receipts in the history, but it seems good - I got the oil changed in the box when I had the car serviced - no whinning or anything. Chances are it's been changed - I don't know if it's even possible to get 96k out a Polo GTi gearbox from what I've read?!..

96k without the gearbox being rebuilt is good going!

aii, 96k is good, probably one of the highest without a rebuild, just keep checking for signs of leakage etc. if it starts leaking, get it looked at ASAP. As the problem is from new the seals start to perish and no body checks the oil level so it starts to run abit dry causin damage to the pinyon bearing which starts eating away at your lovely box then eventually will shoot a hole in your casing.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on the box. Looking at the service history the car has pretty much been under warranty since new - previous owner has had extended warranty cover, so chances are the box has been changed at some point, but there just isnt any record of it.

I'm going to get the gearbox oil changed every 5000 miles though I think, and I'll keep an eye out for leaks.

Whats this pedal box thing tthat should be checked then?I'm quite new to owning a gti and don't know these bits that should be checked....Anyone know plz????

With your cambelt has gone then there is a risk that you may have bent your valves as well.
