You can use either unleaded or super unleaded.
Although I think the engine was designed with Super unleaded in mind as you get far more mpg from using it.
I find it makes it cheaper to buy super unleaded as I get up to 50 miles more out of the tank.
0.76p per litre unleaded
0.82p per litre optimax
0.76 * (40 litres) £30.40 / 380 (Miles per tank) = 0.80 pence per mile
0.82 * (40 litres) £32.80 / 420 (Miles per tank) = 0.78 pence per mile
At least that's what I find.

Just thought I might update you on what happened...
While the car was in the garage they had it on their diagnostics machine. In the end they replaced the ECU now everything is working fine.
MPG is up in the 40's now. Plus one or two other faults fixed.
