With any electrical work to this level, you should disconnect the battery Tim
As for sealing the unit, I'd personally use something like tigerseal (or a similar PU sealant), or a rubber based sealant as opposed to silicone based as it will provide better waterproofing

What did you guys use to reseal the unit?
EDIT: furthermore is there anything I need to consider when removing the unit? Do I need to disconnect the battery etc?
I don't know which part of the unit I'm removing yet, but I'm sure it'll become clear when I have a look. My understanding is that it's the blackbox which can be removed by unscrewing 4 bolts?
I used silicone sealent on my old Gti, as far as im aware still going strong! Obvs disconnect battery, and yes that part you said: remove the ECU from the pump.
NOTE: be carefuly with the 4 inverted torx head screws holding the ecu in place, mine rounded off very easy and you seriously don't want to have to end up doing what i did which was practically sawing through the ecu- on the car.
I used a small hacksaw to carefully saw through the casing once the ecu was off. Dremel would probably have been easier.

If you use silicone sealant, you MUST not use one with an acetate base, as these release an acidic residue/fumes as it cures which can damage circuitry to no end.

What bolt was rounded off? I rounded off two and had to saw through them both using a small hacksaw. VERY time consuming and tedious- but it works. You may need to disasemble the blade from the saw in order to get it into position.

I may have a spare torx screw aswell for the one you've rounded off if you need it Tim ...

I may have to do the same thing. It's the one right at the back, furthest away.
Oh really? That would be magic!

That's a re-bleed brake job though right?

Indeed

Sawing seems to be the best way to get it out, me and my mate had to do mine. He pushed the saw towards the bottom of the engine bay ( going vertically) and i pushed it back upwards. Also had to dettach the blade to get it into position.
Will check i've still got the bolt when i get in, can send it off with the HIDs

BALL ACHE!
Must be done though. Starting to remember how frustrating fiddling with cars is

Yeah it was a re-bleed job, got my local VW specialist to do it along with a central locking problem (the seal on the petrol cap had a hole in it and the car wouldnt lock)
Cost me £80 but most of that was tracing the central locking problem
