Have you considered a Seat Ibiza FR or Cupra? You can get a low mileage 56 Plate Cupra for around £5.5 - 6K.
1.8T 180BHP 20V engine which is very nippy indeed
Obviously being Seat which is towards the lower spectrum of the VAG tree they dont have the attention to detail that you would find on a Volkswagen but they are still good cars, they just dont hold their value very well.

Plenty of fast VAG diesels out there too for relatively cheap prices such as the Fabia vRS, Ibiza Cupra Diesel, Golf GT Tdi, Polo 9N GT, Leon FR & Cupra etc

Only thing that might put people off is its on its original box, but can honestly say its a dream to drive!
