Ok, update, Garage sorta sorted it. Brand new alternator+ labour £170, not to shabby! Only problem now is, lambda sensor light on, and the windows have lost the "one touch" function. Wonder if i got a 70A instead of 90? might explain windows? as for warning light... Grrrr, they fixed exhaust for me too, about a week ago, and all was well until alternator went. Anything else and im selling up, i only earn about a grand a month, and cant afford to blow that regularly on car maintainence!

Glad it's running again

Doesn't sound too bad either considering it's a new unit! Windows can be fixed easily. With the window at the top, hold the switches in the up position for a few seconds. You should here a clicking noise. After this, you should have them working again.
Front or rear sensor, I've got a spare rear here. . . How do you know it's an exhaust sensor fault? Mine logged loads of fault codes which went after a few days after being fixed. Could be worth waiting to see if they go away?

most of your faults will be due to voltage fluctuations when the alty died.
some may need a vagcom scan to clear.

Hey guys, hope all is well. im sorry to keep bothering everyone. I have become aware that i keep leeching advice from you all, and have very little to offer in return

I think perhaps theres a contribution to the common good if others can read this thread, and gain from your collective wisdom in answer to their own problems! Have been scouting about for answers to the emission light problem and something i overlooked struck me. After the repair of my exhaust, (flexi pipe region) i was listening to the (nice quiet) idle, applied a little throttle and there is a "blip" in the revs as the engine returns to idle speed. Dont know if this is a misfire and if its connected to the warning lamp, especially as the warning only occured post alternator change. thanks in advance for any assistance.

Cheers there Slarner, im pig sick of bothering all of you about these things, never mind the problems themselves! As above, i did get VCDS lite, but i think the cable is pretty shoddy, luck of the draw i suppose. Thinkin along the lines of a handheld reader, theres probably more chance of that working than a ten quid cable from who knows where! Certainly cant/wont afford the full monty from Rosstech, tight/poor

The VCDS lite software is good and does work, you just need the correct VAGcom cable. My friend bought a cheap one that worked with his Skoda but didn't with my GTI. My other mate had the proper £200 cable and that was peachy. My exhaust emissions light came on a few months ago (I thought it was engine management at first). It came on after I realised something was wrong. The car wasn't idling right and was very jumpy and jerky, almost impossible to drive. VCDS told me if had an intermittent misfire.

Mine blips slightly before returning to idle too. Then again, my injectors have just failed, so may not be a good indication of normal working!
I got a Gendan cable, and it works fine - worked on my Polo, Golf, a friends Golf, a Passat and a SEAT Cordoba. Baboonface - you have a PM too.

If you're having trouble connecting with he cable I have had this, my cable was only £8 I've noticed that setting the baud sync rate to 9600 usually solves the problem. Worth a shot man

I've done mk4 gtis, Ibiza on a tdi and these polos give it a shot man

Hi Ben, many thanks for the suggestion, i had a scan through some diagnostics forums and they also suggested this. Unfortunately, i reckon its a duff cable issue, because it still only seemed connect with ABS and nothing else! At the time i didnt mind too much, because it was an ABS issue! Got a Gendan unit on the way, fingers crossed! Thanks again bud.

Hey there, hope you are well, may still need a proper full version scan, if so i'll drop you a line, thankyou!
gonna see if the Gendan at least produces any codes, maybe save data, cancel them and i spose if they return theres a genuine fault.
It will probably be next week some time, i have a bad habit of ordering stuff late at night, near the weekend. doh!

All the best.
