Its a shame the Polo GTI didn't have the 6 speed though, that extra gear would be useful on motorway journeys.
I keep going for 7th lol, its legs are a bit short indicated 127/128 and almost at redline. anyway back to topic, sorry to the Op. My 4-1 ashley manifold/decat still for sale and is on ebay now. also have 200 cell Cat aswell.

I keep trying to put mine in 6th after I've been driving a 6 speed Sprinter!

It is nice having 6 gears

my first car was only a 4 speed so I have gained a gear with every car I have owned

The 6th would be lovely
But I don't do much motorway miles apart from to shows etc
That's another thing me and Matt talked about last night lol

When you have a 6 speed box you generally treat 6th as if it was 5th anyway
Its good for lazy shifting because you can just bypass 3rd and 5th by slotting it from 2nd to 4th and then 4th to 6th

love it!

I'm thinking of maybe a lupo gti engine and box all rebuilt with updated parts at some point and then maybe a turbo bolted on

thats my plan over winter, but the turbo/supercharger route seems bound to fail before it starts for a few reasons,
1. the shear cost, only exhaust manifolds i can find are from germany, £500 for a manifold. add to that, custom bits, turbo, intercooler and piping. then added to that the cost of engine rebuild, cheaper to drop compression by spacer for smaller gains but any more complete new unrated internals that will end in you selling a kidney to fund.
2. the lack of company's in this country to remap the siemens ecu hence running stand alone management and someone to do fueling etc.
3. the lack of hard evidence that you can go down this route spending that kind of money and end up with a engine that is reliable and drive-able.
So i am going down the route of rebuild using standard internals, wont even change pistons unless i find something really bad, will re-hone bores, size rings to bore, lighten and balance crank, new oil pump, shells, seals etc. then strip the spare Arc head i have (using this as it carries the sensor that i need but vw says is not there), port and polish, new guides seals etc and a set of cams.

Some good points mentioned by Georgen reference tuning options, price and availability.
The best bang for buck would be to slap on a turbo running lowish boost, I'm sure you could pull 190-200bhp which in a car that weighs just over a tonne would be great fun.
Gearbox would be the major issue again because its not going to cope long running those figures.
Getting a LSD and some sticky tyres would be wise
If I had my GTI still I would probably look at the conversion costs to put in a B16B Honda Engine and EK9 Type R gearbox.
Its only a 1.6 but puts out 185bhp and revs to 9K, LSD gearbox with great ratio's so it would be a hell of combo, it would fit snug in the Polo too.

If I managed to source the bits at a reasonable cost, I was planing running a smaller turbo and a less lower compression as what is normally done, bit like the early Saab and Toyota supra's did, then you would have a lot less turbo lag then usable power lower down the range as smaller turbo would spool up a lot quicker, plus you could hold it on line a tadge longer by tweaking the wastegate actuator. I know what I want, it just seems Ive missed the gravy boat on this engine by a couple of years, the Germans say either 1.8t it or put a AJV engine in which is the 1.6 120 bhp one fitted to there 6n gti as it has more tuning scope and more bits readily available.

Being able to pull away easily in 2nd/3rd is lovely too. Especially around town where you can treat it like an auto.
To answer the original question - they're a 4-> 1 affair.
I thought the 6 speeds had the same final drive as the 5 speeds anyway, just the middle gears were closer?
My engine's dead at the minute. If it turns out the bottom end is trashed as well, I think I'll be fitting an AFH (because they're so much cheaper) and carbing it up (and if I can find any cheap enough, cams).
I did seriously consider looking at the B16B engines, but the gearboxes are on the left of the car, and not the right so I was expecting it to be a massive pain to fit! (Plus I've lost interest so don't want such a large project!)
