Nice progress Matt 8)

Those are some big b1tch calipers :) what wheels are you going to be running on this?

Cheers Ben, Hoping to run the 16 inch BBS RC's refurbed in anthracite. Probably with 205 40 Toyo R888's. But if running day to day I hope the red ronals will fit.

Will save the R888's for summer fun and maybe the odd track day. The calipers should just fit under 15's with a 280 disc. Its the same as Trigerfish had on here so should be ok.

More surprises later today as its my Birthday and its all going to the car ;)

First time I've logged in for ages - looks like a good buy that! Will be interesting to watch this pan out!

Nice brakes too - they look better than my black ones! ;)

Thanks man. I am currently in the middle of the North Sea at the moment but when im home i'll probably try and pester you for the billet part number as the ones on it are for an escort Cosworth i think.

Plan is when I get home to test the bodged shafts to see if they are a good length, strip out the leon engine and steal the box, shallow sump and other bits. Then source a nice low mileage BAM. So the leon engine is up for sale if anyone wants it. Has a brand new K03s turbo which will most likely be sold separately.

Then make it fit really well and scarf in the butchered chassis legs on the near side. Then think about wiring it up and running it ;)

Right time to update this. I have been home 2 weeks now and have got on with the build a little bit. So far I have stripped out the old AUQ to find more bodged treasures that need fixing and stripped the 4 pots down waiting on the correct bits. I will let the pictures do most of the talking:

Image

Image

Image

Before removing the AUQ I tried the shafts that the guy had made. One was to long and one was to short so they are in the scrap pile. However i learnt that the gearbox side of things needed to come forward as the CV boot was rubbing on the sub frame

I am also thinking that a 6 speed box may be a bit of a big ask. thinking of a TDI box instead as it will give longer ratios and less wheel spin. They are also bullet proof.

Image

Image

Nicely cut out subframe for the 6 speed box  Will be replaced

Image

Believe it or not this used to be a strong safe chassis leg:

Image

SO

The plan is to put back in place some original chassis legs all welded nicely so it has its strength back and completely START AGAIN

Starting to wonder if i should have bought a normal gti to begin with

It will take a lot of fixing but when done will be awesome.

On a more positive note this has just been paid for:

AUDI TT BAM ENGINE with 66,860 miles on the clock. Will have new rods, pistons and rings and hopefully run close to 300bhp.

Its going to be a lot of work but I think it will be worth it :)

starting from scratch with a new car might be a good idea tbh
that chasis leg does looks like a bit of a mess
the subframe can be replaced easily so that part is fine

id be a bit worried with the mounting points
i only say this because from the sounds of it, it has been a bit of a bodged job from the previous owner
last thing u want is your mounts coming away from the car

The long driveshaft on my car was 66cm in length
that was the length of the bare shaft without the CV joints attached
use that as a rough guide as im not sure if the length is different on 6 speed gearboxes
im using a 5 speed 9n3 GTi box btw

Thanks for that measurement sir that will be of great help.

I shall be starting again with the chassis legs. I have two that have been chopped off a scraper and using the professional aid of my college we will scarf in the new ones by seem and plug welding them into place. Should be stronger than standard after we are done with it but I know what you mean. Another car maybe an easier option. Shall see how it goes. Would be a shame as this is a nice clean shell apart from this.

I have been reading up on box's and am still undecided. I would like an 02A CTN box as the ratios are nice but I am not sure on the box dimensions. Yes I see that you are running the 02R box. I was just questioning their strengths in the 9n3 section?

The subframe is now off and have a nice whole one which will be going in soon.

Thanks for your help again,

Matt

ive read the otehr thread.. so il put an answer to that here

i would definitely go for an 02J over an 02A simply because its a newer box
id only get an 02R box if it comes up cheap.. if not an 02J is fine

im 95% sure that 02R and 02J use the same casing so are the same size
im not sure about the difference with the 02A but if there is a difference it will be fairly minor

tbh honest im not convinced by the CTN and ASD hype
the longer ratios may help at lower gears.. but traction will be an issue so you wont utilise the long gears
once you get into the higher gears and you have the grip, the k04 turbo will run out of power.. so i dont think the long ratios will be any good to you
i may be wrong about that tho... its the logic i used when choosing my box

Also if you pick a 5 speed box you can use the G60 flywheel and vr6 clutch combo which is good to take the power of a mapped k04 and is a cheap clutch change in the future
you cannot use that setup on a 6 speed

as for LSD your options are Quaife or Peloquin (both are basically identical)... or Wavetrac which from what i hear is suited more for track use whereas Peloquin and Quaife are a compromise between track and road use
again just something i heard when i did research into mine..i went with a Peloquin in the end

this may be an interesting read for u
