Can you clarify that a bit more for me Alex...... are you saying that the Elsawin blocks and the vcds block don't always have the same data points ?

I've just been looking on the parts list for the cam end plate seals - 036 103 111A in case I decide to become more aggressive in my removal method. I assume they are main dealer only ?

Correct. Elsawin is designed to work with the vw diagnostic system. Vcds is a consumer variant and isn't always 100% the same

I would think so. I wouldn't use a part like that that wasn't genuine in any case

OK, thanks a lot, I suppose that can keep life interesting.........

Would I be right in assuming that block 3 of 093 should be zero in vcds - the first of the two possible interpretations and that "last" is not written in English but in German meaning load in English

I have just edited my earlier post with some big red text pointing out my mistake on the data points.

I did a comparative run today in the silver car, here are the results

The Vagcom description for measuring block 093, sector 3 says that it measures "Phase position Bank 1" with two footnotes [1] [2]

[1] Deviation from correct position (shift of camshaft position sensor on shaft), 0 = Position OK

[2] The phase position is displayed only when the phase adaptation was successfully concluded

The data log shows the following

---------------------------- Silver Car ------------------------------ Black car --------
Idle------------------ 1.9-2.2 degrees BTDC --------------- 3.3-5.2 degrees ATDC
Full Throttle-------- 1.9-2.2 degrees BTDC --------------- 3.3-4.4 degrees ATDC
Range--------------- 1.9-3.0 degrees BTDC --------------- 3.3-5.2 degrees ATDC

The spec according for the same measuring block in Elaswin is 1.0 degrees BTDC to 8 degrees ATDC

However, based in this thread http://audisrs.com/ftopic21169-0-asc-0.php it seems that vagcom is measuring a deviation from the ideal/programmed position whereas Elsawin talks about the actual camshaft adjustment

So, it seems that the cam timing between the two cars is 5.4-8.2 degrees different to each other. If the correct VAG-com value is zero (from the audi thread / Ross-tech), then it would seem that the silver car is closer to spec than the black one. If the Elsawin approach is correct then the black car is bank on the centre of the range and the silver car is out of the range.

Is there anyone who knows the VW and Rosstech software sufficiently well to confirm which view is correct, or alternatively access to both bits of kit to do a back to back comparison ??
