I'm guessing a bit here, but, all modern VW petrol engines tend to use the same engine oil - as that makes life safer at dealership workshops, well maybe with the exception of some higher powered variants like V6 and 1.8T/2.0T.(I'm probably wrong there as my 3.0TFSI Supercharged S4 also uses normal oils - R8 and some others will demand different oils though)
So that means 5W-30 or 5W-40 to the correct VAG 50? spec, there will also be 0W-30 and 0W-40 but if you are keeping that car for 8>10 then overall reliability will be more important than MPG.
Maybe have a look on the Opie website as I'd think that it will quote one weight of oil for longlife servicing and another for fixed/annual servicing, again if you are keeping that car for 8>10 years and running up to 10K a year then fixed/annual servicing should be what you pick.
Personally, I use Mobil One 5W-30 ESP on all my cars - get it from Opie Oils, and buy genuine VW group oil filters where cheapest ahead of time, which normally means an on-line VW main dealer.
Thankyou

I think VW use long life oil for all servicing nowadays, irrespective of whether your car is on long life or time and distance service regime.

True, but I felt that the poster I was replying to was intending to carry out his own services, so I was pointing out that in the "open market" there will be two different oil options which correspond to VW group oil specs for both types of servicing regimes.
Edit:- I'd expect that the logic in using one oil for the two service regimes is down to workshops only needing to stock 2 oil types instead of 4 so they will get a better deal on the unit cost to supply - and punish any customers that would normally only need and use the cheaper option.

Castrol Edge 5w30 LL 4 litres on route to me from Opie Oils = £32.95 free postage off ebay
Will book a Service at VW for them to do the first service with oil provide by me. How they can charge £80-£90 for the same oil is outrageous and will be pointed out to them.

Good luck with getting them to use your supplied oil, I would have thought that they would only use "their" oil or oil that you had bought at their parts department, but time will tell.
Remember while you have bought suitable Castrol Edge oil, they might argue that it is not the Castrol Edge Professional that they use - if indeed they do bother to use Castrol oil products, the only difference in the Professional version is the addition of a fluoride dye which is either to assist in tracing oil leaks, or more likely to make sure that the "correct" oil has been used, ie protectionism!
The devil in me makes me think that I should consider trying that out on my Audi dealer - though probably I'll just start doing my own servicing as I have already bought the oil from Opie Oils.
Edit:- oh remember to take notes of what explanation they give for needing to charge huge/greedy prices for oil - so that we can all have a laugh at their expense, and maybe quote the "VW party line" back to our own dealers??

opie oils is where i got it from and will do again.
think vw were going to charge in the order of £80-90 for the oil
Can you explain how you got them to use your supplied oil, it is what i will be doing and was it a VW Main Dealer , if so can you tell me which one or any other other useful information.

I have been in touch with Wolsey VW and they have told me the oil required for this first service is £9 + VAT a litre and is shell oil. Where the other poster got £80-£90 from i don't know , but that is b@llocks !
I will be using their oil , the stuff i have bought can go in my boys GTI.

ok whatever you say but that was the price i was quoted at the time
so it's still £55 for the 5 liters required for a gti at the price you have been quoted

I think that the "£80>90" quoted by another poster is just what I have been charged in the past when you factor in price increases - ie £15+ a litre. The fact that they are using Shell, is just down to who has won the contract to supply and uplift that area's VW group of workshops, brand will change with time, my Audi S4, got Mobil One ESP 5w-30 at its local garage where it was reg'd new, but my local Audi garage might have used Shell, it was 0W-30 whatever it brand it was.
Might make you think that £9+VAT = £10.80 is only the price they charge if that question has been asked prior to booking the car in, I've just checked what I worked out doing my own service cost on my 2011 Audi S4 using Mobil One ESP 5W-30 sourced from Opie Oils and a filter and drain washer sourced from an on-line Audi main dealership, and that total cost was £56.57 - at your quoted oil price for my S4, which holds 6.4litres, which rounds up to 7litres as they charge by the complete litre = £75.60 - I'm only making that comparison as I've forgotten what my oil cost me per litre, so they are still making quite a killing on the oil considering that they will be buying it in in bulk at about £4 a litre and my genuine oil filter and drain washer were probably close to £6.0 - giving using that example a price hike of 50% ?
I fully accept that a VW group dealership does need to make a profit out of the sales of oil, but unlike genuine VW group spare parts where it seems like they charge an acceptable price - and we can't buy them elsewhere cheaper unless using an on-line VW group main dealer, the oil is easily available on the open market so we are not tied to buying it only from VW group dealerships - but if we do let them supply it, they get very very greedy.
Edit:- the other thing is, lots of us get very "precious" when it comes to our cars, and that can include liking/wanting to be able to specify a VW compliant oil from a brand that we personally trust - which might not be the brand that our local dealer is signed up to using, it does seem that Castrol, for one, does nowadays come very low down the list of oils "of good qualities" - ie they are now living on their good name from the past, Shell also being another brand that has been bought over by who knows and is also not well respected it seems. Crazily, Mobil One ESP is an oil that comes with very good reviews world wide - and is cheaper than Castrol and Shell, which is why I use it.
Edit:- found the receipt for my oil and it comes out at £5.49 a litre, so the cost of the oil to fill my Audi S4 was £36.78 compare that with £75.60 at that VW dealer's quoted oil supply price or £105+ at the normal £15+ per litre, does not make good reading, someone is making a shed full of money.

I just sent an email asking the price of the oil in a first service for our car. I got an email answer and then booked over the phone. So nobody booking would know i had asked the question.
