Yes, a bit of a fiddle but very doable.

I was hoping it wouldn't turn into two winters of discontent which would have been enough to start to consider life beyond a Polo.

That is true. It's puzzling because the bulb holder is effectively a bayonet mount and holds quite firm.

If anyone experiences this problem it is probably more expedient to proceed with the fix rather than spend time on diagnostics.
