I would like to tackle this topic from another side, related to DSG: when you turn off the Stop/Start, doesn't the clutch wear when the car is standing still? Is it completely disengaged, or is it slightly engaged to give the appearance of automatic gearbox?

Thanks, __Yehavi:
Don't 100% know the answer to that one, but when you have your foot on the brake, the clutches feel fully disengaged, getting back to bite point when the brake pedal pressure is reduced to almost nothing - whether those clutches are skimming the whole time is unknown. As the clutches on the Polo GTI's DSG are submerged in transmission fluid, any skimming wear from slight engagement If it happens) will be minimal.

This isn't the case for the 7 speed dry clutch variant fitted to the 1.0TSI Polos. These ones don't need a transmission fluid change because material from clutches wearing isn't retained by the fluid.

My Dad has had DSG on his last 3 performance diesel Golfs (a MK4 1.9TDI 130ps, a MK5 Golf GT 2.0TDI 170ps, and a MK7 Golf GTD). He's done over 150,000 miles on each of the first 2 before getting rid of them (still fully working), and the GTD is up to about 120,000 miles right now. Many of those miles are motorway miles, but it still shows how resilient these boxes are.

As long you don’t mistreat the DSG it should last well over 100,000 miles.

I’m sure the designer’s have allowed for minimum clutch wear when the car is in traffic etc.

Can’t remember where I read it but someone using their car (Audi) as a taxi with DSG got over 200,000 miles with out any problems part from gearbox service’s in that time.
