you have a bloke that comes round and fixes engines? sweeeeet. sounds like my uncle but for engines, not random things that you'd never expect he knew.

Yeah, he used to work for Hometune.. think he still does part time. Just a mobile mechanic service basically, but he's done my parents' cars for as long as I can remember, and he lowers his (already very reasonable) prices if it's cash in hand

Wonderful man he is. Lent me an engine crane for two months in the summer, no charge, he was just happy to see someone taking an interest in cars

And was brought up on carbs like me so can understand how they work and doesn't have to plug the whole car into a machine to diagnose a problem - nice person to know - I hope you bought him a drink for the loan of the engine crane - mine is rarely at home..... in fact it's not even at home now cos a mate is borrowing it

On porka we have a communal engine crane. It belongs to optima21 but ive done 3 engine conversions with it so far, and a few other ppl have done one or two as well.

Respect to him for being so generous!

Im on here toooo just dont post as much...
I just tend to buy the gear to do a job, but whats the point in having equipment stuck in a shed doing nothing, when it doesnt cost anything to lend it to someone, and quite often just having the equipment available is enough to encourage people into having a go themselves.

I agree - I do lend stuff to people but I'm a bit more carefull who I lend stuff to now - having lost a few tools and the odd piece of specialist kit over the years
Believe me - my current engine crane is my second - the first one well lets just say it didn't find it's way back home in the same condition it left it in and torque wrenches that are used as breaker bars are fit for just that once it's happened
I'm in another club and stuff that you just can't justify buying gets loaned around and it seems to work well - as I get a benefit from that sometimes I do my bit to help out too but like I said I'm a bit more choosey now

Yeah, I was thinking of trying to get some kind of tool sharing scheme going on here.. I've ended up with the odd bit of relatively specialist tools whilst I was tearing my engine apart in the summer, piston ring compressors etc, and I'm always noticing people saying they don't have a torque wrench or a particular socket when I do.. seems a waste not to lend it out really.

You're welcome to borrow a torque wrench if you want, I have two of them (inherited one from slightly eccentric engineer neighbour who sadly died earlier this year.. I now have rather a lot of his tools though..). Can't help with the wheely mechanic thing though, I just lie on a bit of an old sleeping bag that used to make up the dog's bed
