This week seems to have bloomed for cars in my range. Trying to narrow them down to viewing a few this weekend now.
nigelelliott394 wrote:Tim, did you ever get around to getting this mapped before you sold it?
I'm curious to know what the 1.4's are like with 182lb/ft of torque (I think that's what they're mapped to, right?). Would it pull away from a 6n2 GTI? I'm at the stage now where I'm kind of struggling to afford to run the GTI and thinking about going back to diesel but would love something just as quick and a hell of a lot cheaper to run, insure and tax.
They remap to around 100BHP, not sure on torque figures off the top of my head.
They're great little cars, but I felt the effect of going from the GTi to this. I'd recommend a 4 cylinder diesel, less noisy and room to modify if you want.
The reason why I sold it was I came to a cross roads, it was either plough money into engine mods or sell it. The latter happened as I realised 3 cylinders were too restrictive for the power I was seeking.
A vRS or 100BHP version of the 9N3 may be suitable mate?
When I'm done with mine, it'll be putting out north of 140bhp. No bull.

With what mods mate?

Nothing fancy. Bigger turbo (undecided on which, narrowed it down to three candidates), bigger injectors from the VW parts bin, PD100 clutch / DMF and some smart mapping.
The only thing is I'll be limiting the torque to about 250 lbft. I'm still not sure what the stock internals can handle, but according to some estimations 250 lbft should be fine and dandy for 24/7 use.
It's still a while off though. I aim to finish it by the summer.

Would a remap perhaps take it on par power wise with what the GTI is? I'm not necessarily worried about 0-60 times because... well, who really does 0-60 red lining every gear in real world traffic situations? The opportunity very rarely presents itself where it's safe to do so.
I'd miss the power of my GTI but if i knew a remap on a 1.4 3pot would still make it a nippy little car i'd almost go for one purely because they're much, much cheaper to run. I think with everything needing fixed on mine right now I'm just losing heart

K.I.T.T. you got a link to your progress/build thread?

I'd be interested in reading it.

As of yet, I have no build thread Nigel. I've had the car for four years now, and the only "modifications" include a headunit, a stubby aerial and a remap
I have some big plans in the pipeline though. I'll start a build thread once I get the ball rolling - I'll remember to send you a link.
I realise it'd be much easier to start off with a 4 cylinder 1.9, but where's the fun in that?
Ash
PS: Sorry for hijacking your thread Tim

What turbo? Or is is a weld up job from a 4 cylinder?
No worries for the hijack, the car is gone now!

With a remap it would perhaps challenge a GTi in running gear. Off the line I don't think it would stand much of a chance

The little 1.4TDI PD engines re-maps to between 95-103bhp and the standard torque goes from 144 ft lbs to 185
I use my dad's 6N2 TDI all the time and despite it being standard they are still pretty pokey and get up to speed quick enough. They have over 30 ft lbs of torque more than my old GTI so pull really well going up hills its just in a straight line they can feel a little under powered at times.
I cant see a remap making it as quick as the GTI but it certainly wouldnt be that far off due to the torque figures.
If I was getting a diesel though it would have to be either the Polo GT 9N, Fabia vRS or the Ibiza Cupra PD160 all great cars

Hmmm... is your dads remapped Ben? I'm just really struggling to run the GTI these days and would love similar performance and A LOT more economy. I would of course have to make it look good too
The 1.9's don't really appeal to me because I just imagine they'd be heavy and the insurance and tax might not just be as cheap as the 1.4. Also, surely the 3 cylinders sound pretty cool?

Theyre loud and rattly!
Take one for a test drive mate, that's the only way of knowing.
In my opinion, it'll be too much of a step down. I bought one with a fair bit of GTi cosmetics, so it looked good. Wasn't enough for me though, I'm gunna stick to cars top in their class from now on!

My Dad's is completely standard Nigel but the economy from the little 3 cylinder engine is awesome! On a good motorway run it will pull 70mpg and on average gets around 55-60mpg which I think is pretty impressive. I would imagine re-mapped they would be pretty quick in 3rd & 4th gear making use of the torque but as its 1.4 3 cylinder engine it’s not going to be good top end compared to the GTI.
The suspension would have to be addressed too as its pretty terrible on the 6N2 TDi, really does feel dodgy in the corners but i'm sure a good set of shocks & lowering springs would address that

The gearbox on the TDI Polo's feel much nicer than the GTI, it’s the same box with different ratio's but feels firmer when engaging gears. Hope this helps mate
Sorry for Hijacking your build thread Tim

Nice one mate
Is it a limited edition vRS with it having Leather?

No, SEs only come in Blue, which I'm not a fan of.
Factory leather was an option for all vRSs for an additional 1k odd. They came as standard on the SEs, with custom numbers.
Bit over budget but it'll be worth it!

If I get a cheap (<£100) used GT1749V off a PD100, I'll cut and weld shut one of the runners on the manifold and use that as a stop gap.
Otherwise, It's a toss between a GTB1749VK off a twin-turbo V6 4.2 TDI or a GTB1756VK off a 2.7 V6 TDI on my spare manifold (ignore my MS paint skills, wanted to get dimensions off a Passat manifold):
