I went for the Deep Pearl Black colour, 18” Brescia wheels, climate control and the deep iron dash inserts. I was tempted by the satnav, just to see it on the active info display, but not at the price they wanted - plus I rarely use satnav and prefer google maps.

I love the Reef Blue colour. I did consider it, but my current car is a similar colour and I fancied a change.

Roll on the end of March when the wait will be over (hopefully!).

One good thing about it, you'll have a 19 plate :) if you get it late March.

Sounds very nice Martin-GTi. I’ve always been a blue car man so it just had to be the Reef Blue. I did test drive a black and was very tempted as it looked a lot better than I thought it would. Had it of had the Brescia alloys and grey dash I’d have signed for it there and then I think!

My salesman called me today to tell me it’s on a boat. Just waiting for him to get get back to me to tell me which boat so I can stalk it. He reckons 5 weeks is the most realistic time frame for the delivery to them.

That’s definitely a bonus / reward for the wait, silverhairs - a 19 plate will be nice.

@JimBob23 - I’ll call my dealer tomorrow and try to get the name of the ship mine is on too. Let me know if you get an update. I think they all go to Emden first, so it’s quite likely they’ll be on the same ship :D

A few questions for those that have gone through this already:-

After the transporter ship has docked in Emden (if that is the case), what happens next? Is there some type of inspection? And are all UK bound vehicles sent on the same ship docking at several UK ports, or on individual ships depending on their ultimate destination and nearest UK port to the dealer?

Also (and feel free to call me paranoid), but how many miles should a new car have on it? It’s the first GTI+ my dealer will have ever received and I have visions of bored mechanics taking it for extended test runs to see how it performs.

Thanks!

I've had 9 VWs from new, and they've had between 4 and 13 miles on them at point of delivery. Once at Emden they are sent on ships that go to one port (generally). If your dealership is North of Northallerton, your car will be goimg to Tyne and last time I took the interest in stalking my incoming car Tyne was served by "City of Rome", "City of Paris" and "City of Rotterdam". They drop off German cars *from Emden) at Tyne, pick up a load of Sunderland built Nissans to drop off in Helsinki, then come back, pick up more Nissans to take to Amsterdam, then go back to Emden (I'm sure there are a few more stops along the way).

South of Northallerton and North of Norfolk, your car will end up at Grimsby. Norfolk and down is served by Sheerness. Each of those ports will have a regular roster of ships.

Thank you for the info, monkeyhanger - that’s really useful.

I see from your previous posts that you’ve ordered a second GTI. I’ll take that as an endorsement that I’ve made the right choice. :D

It certainly is an endorsement. The Golf GTI and R are ridiculously expensive now, and the Polo GTI+ is a bargain by comparison - 90% of a Golf GTI for 2/3 of the cost (PCP monthlies or depreciation as a cash buyer).

The Polo feels better built than my Golf R (not by much), and save for a lack of rubberized trim on the top edges of the door cards and slightly harder plastics used for the interior door closing handles, every bit as plush inside.

I willingly passed the Golf R to my wife when our first GTI+ turned up, and the only thing I miss is the unflappable 4WD traction. I'm sure the Polo's tenancy to tramp and wheelspin can be reined in with better tyres. Next time Costco have a promotion on Michelins, I'll be getting a set of PS4 tyres.

I’ve been trying to work out the differences between the 2019 GTI (post WLTP) and the model delivered prior to Sept 2018.

From what I’ve read, the new model has USB ports in the back and a totally redesigned exhaust system with a GPF (or ODF if you’re on the continent). The exhaust system has apparently been engineered to sound the same, ensure the car delivers the same performance, but fewer / no ‘pops & bangs’ due to the GPF - which doesn’t bother me. Are there any other changes that anyone is aware of?

Engine changed from CZCP to DKZC probably only because of GPF

This what sealed the decision for me.
Or as the old Volkswagen advert used to state:
“its like a golf, but not a golf”
But in my eyes it’s so damn close, it’s not worth spending the extra money

"Scuff plates in door apertures (illuminated)" has been mentioned as being present in standard spec in the UK configurator, but I haven't seen them or heard of anyone substantiating this.

Had a lovely app update and email come through today, approx. 1hr ago... "Your car has been built and has left the factory." aka Stage 5! :D

My build week was w/c 11th February (Monday) but my retailer has said it was actually wrong, that on their system it was w/c 4th February (can't complain about that, heh). Should be here within next 4-6 weeks. The app says it takes (on average) 4 weeks from build to retailer, but I know it can sometimes be a little longer than that.

Build I went for: Reef Blue Metallic, Brescia Wheels, Winter Pack, Jacara Red cloth and red dash - which compliments GTI well, and stands out a bit more, too.

Martin-GTi - Did you call your dealer to enquire about the ship? I've not heard back from mine yet so may give him a call later on. I hope the new exhaust system does perform the same as the pre WLTP one. When i test drove one last year i liked the odd "pop & bang" i didn't think they were too loud and in your face, they were nice and subtle.

M95DS - Another Reef Blue :D I see you went for the Red dash, i swapped mine over to the grey. Would be good some see some shots of yours when it finally arrives.

Here’s a YouTube video of the 2019 GTI with a GPF. It shows the new exhaust sound. I can’t say whether it’s a different sound to the pre-WLTP version, but others might have a view:-

JimBob23 - I have spoken to my dealer. He didn’t tell me anything I wasn’t already aware of and couldn’t tell me the name of the ship. I’ll try to contact VW customer services if I don’t hear anything by Friday.
