Have been looking at these over the past few days and am very tempted to get one!!

Likewise but the fact that you can take it off is what appeals..
Have heard mixed messages about whether the dealer can tell if a box has been fitted (after it has been removed) or not but I think it's a much safer option than remapping when it comes to warranty claims..

Yeah as I said I've heard mixed messages, some people say it can't be detected and others say that the ECU will store information such as the turbo boosting harder etc and they can tell something has been fiddled with

If a dealer wants to know if you have a remap or tuning box it wouldn't be hard at all.
It depends on dealer and nature of warranty claim as to whether they do the work or not.
My local dealer tightened my turbo bolts on my old polo for free when clearly the exhaust was not standard( milltek turbo back).
How are these boxes fitted? Do you plug your ecu lead into it then run a lead back to the ecu?

The definitive verdict is that they do know it has been there. The they in this mix is insurance companies rather than the dealers who require this capability. After that it's only going to be noticed by a dealer should something go askew with your engine and they then have to check further. All modern cars use VAL Vehicle Analysis Log which insurance companies can use in the event of a crash and this will store various data to flash rom.
This logs all runtime data, 'Actual' values, conditions and Adaptation and coding data where relevant from all ECU's on the vehicle (DME, Instrument Cluster et al) the data can be used to pinpoint adaptation trends and enables worldwide comparison for system improvements and also reference for technicians to aid fault diagnosis. Most ECU's have volatile memories that can be erased / cleared with use or with a battery disconnect but there are also units that are non-volatile. The latest cars have more units with Permanent Fault memory sections - particularly linked to emissions and engine running conditions. Instrument clusters on 1997> cars can store info on distance driven with check light on and time/mileage with low oil pressure.

That's the basic summary

of course if you do do it then insure it properly with the likes of Adrian Flux and once it's out of warranty then Warranty Direct will entertain a modified car but of course at a cost and in which case it's more worthwhile buying a faster car in the first place!
