Although in the test on the dealer had to be very close to the car to unlock.

I’m sure that some owners with keyless entry will have purchased Faraday pouches. If you’re concerned about possible relay thefts, then a metal container such as a biscuit tin should be just as effective as a Faraday pouch. You can also temporarily disable the keyless entry functionality - from the owner’s manual;

Temporarily deactivating Keyless Access
Keyless Access can be deactivated temporarily as described below so that the vehicle cannot be unlocked and started due to misuse by unauthorised third parties.

• Lock the vehicle with the ‘lock’ button in the vehicle key.

• In addition, touch the sensor on the outside of the door handle once within five seconds ⇒ Fig. 59Ⓑ . Do not reach into the door handle.

• Keyless Access is now temporarily deactivated.

• Check deactivation by waiting for at least ten seconds and then pull the door handle again. It should not be possible to open the door.

When the vehicle is next unlocked, it can be unlocked only using the vehicle key. The keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access is reactivated the next time the vehicle is unlocked.

Faraday pouches can be susceptible to failure if the metallic lining of the pouches become damaged through regular use, so if you do decide to use these (don’t forget to get a second one to keep the spare key in), then it’d be advisable to test them periodically by standing next to the locked car with the key in the pouch and trying to unlock it.

This (expensive) option to a Faraday pouch was recommended by a forum member over on VWROC.com recently. Looks very good quality and shouldn’t be susceptible to wear damage;

The big downside if you keep your car key on a ring with other keys is that it’s only large enough to accommodate a single car key fob.

I've bought two pouches. One for the spare key which sits in a draw and the other for daily use.

As SRGTD mentioned though, disabling the keyless entry is an automatic process for me now when leaving the car. Gives me a bit more peace of mind.

I've bought 2 as well to use temporarily when I get my car until I disable keyless entry completely with ODBEleven (less about security, more about how the VW system works). I have tested the pouches in my i3 which has keyless start but not entry (same as I will set my Polo to be like) and the fobs are not detected when inside the car.

Haven't bothered myself. No car crime fears in my locality. If I had a Golf R in Coventry I'd be perpetually fearful.

I tried a larger pouch which was big enough to get a small bunch of keys or clubcard pasport etc in, it does work. Then I tried a smaller pouch similar to those mentioned previously, the pouch seems to work on the car, however one of the other fobs on the keychain is for a communal doorway, and with the keys fully enclosed in the bag the door on the communal doors will operate

Thanks for feedback. I'm in Stratford Upon Avon so hardly the crime capital of the country but you never know.

Got my 5c tracker notification today. To say the tracker in usually wildly inaccurate. For me, it has been spot on and has given me a notification at every step and has given me more useful information than the dealer...

Am I missing something with the whole faraday thing. As far as I can work out you lock the Polo then press the square on the door handle within 5 seconds and it disables the keyless. Therefore what's the point in a faraday?

Am I missing something with the whole faraday thing. As far as I can work out you lock the Polo then press the square on the door handle within 5 seconds and it disables the keyless. Therefore what's the point in a faraday?

For that one time, you forget to press the button or you actually want to use the keyless access function you paid for.

For me anyway pressing that square to disable it every time is not ideal. Many times I will unload the car of shopping, carry it into the house then lock the car from my doorway. Having to go back to the car to disable keyless entry is more of a pain then just putting the key in a Faraday pouch or box.

You can’t disable it on a lot of cars like certain Mercs and Mustangs yet you can on a Polo same as a Tesla. Maybe others you can too but I don’t know which.

From what I’ve read on other forums, it is possible to disable Mercedes keyless-go, at least on some - if not all - models. Also, the current Ford Fiesta and Focus models with keyless entry now have a motion sensor in the key fob that automatically puts the fob into sleep mode if the motion sensor in the fob hasn’t detected any movement in the last (I think) 40 seconds.

So maybe manufacturers are now beginning to take keyless-related security issues seriously; not before time IMO.

Car manufacturers playing catch up. I remember the 90s where car stereos were regularly stolen from cars. Then VW for instance introduced a stereo where the front panel detached and you took it with you. Better still they became integral to the dash and problem roundly solved.
